SOURCE: Carbies willn't set float level,right floods,left sets to low

I don't know if its any help but I've fixed my Honda with similar problem. It turns out I reassembled the rich carbys air cut off valve incorrectly. Have you checked yours? I'm wondering if the cut off valves somehow affect the other parts of the carbys. Mine is running sweet now.

The adjuster tang on the float (in green) rises and falls to maintain fuel level. It pushes on the float needle to stop the flow and drops to let fuel in. Did you loose the needle? If all parts are there, gently bend the tang upward to lower the gas level in the carb.

I have a 1982 Virago 750 that I just did a carb rebuild to. To set the float levels I built a jig from wood that simulates the position of the carbs when mounted on the bike. This jig clamps into my bench vise. I created a fuel supply using a small funnel and a piece of fuel hose mounted above the level of the carbs.. After that all you need is a short length of transparent fuel hose to attach to the drain on the bottom of the float bowl to provide the visual indication of the float setting. Now you are ready to set up the float levels on your bench. This is way easier than trying to set them up in the bike.

Make sure that the jig is set up so that the carbs sit as level as possible across the pair and that they sit as close to the natural position in the bike in the lengthwise position when the bike is sitting level.

The process of setting up these floats can be very tedious, be patient. It may require that the float bowls be removed multiple times to get it correct (I replaced the philips head machine screws with allen head screws to make this easier). Printed instructions for the procedure look for a certain fuel level setting plus or minus 1mm. This kind of tolerance can be quite difficult to get when the only adjustment you have to work with is to bend the metal tang on the float assembly.

Hello dnjvp...The Hitachi HSC 40mm carbs on the 920 can be jetted and modded as needed to give you the right mixture for any engine or exhaust modifications.
Here is the breakdown for the slide and the internal parts. Check the needle for wear, clean all parts and put back together. Make sure you hold the diaphragm up to the light and check for pinholes. If any are found use a sealer like to fix.

- Now days some carburetors are produced which are fixed and no adjustment is provided.The float is made up of whole plastic like material.
Some floats have the copper/metal notch for the adjustment of fuel level.
- Take the carburetor assembly out.
- Remove the fuel bowls.
- Place the carburetor assembly with the floats upward towards yourself.
- Float level gauge and active data list (taken from the workshop manual) is required to carry out the adjustment. But you can simply adjust the float level correctly without any gauge.
- Hold the carburetor assembly at your eye level in such a way that the carburetor No. 1 is in front of you. Behind is No. 2 carburetor, then behind is No. 3 and then the No. 4. Or we can say that the carburetor No. 1 hides the carburetors 2, 3, and 4.
- Examine carefully the floats of all the individual carburetors be parallel to the surface of the carburetor where the float bowl face is seated and tightened.
- Adjust the float level by bending the float notch towards the needle valve (to decrease the float level and to raise the float) or away from the needle valve to increase the float level (to lower the float).

I just bought a used 1990 kawasaki 300 bayou put a new carb on it guy let it set for about a month now when u turn on fuel it leaks out if the over flow tube what could cause this


Floats not set right. Float needle worn. Dirt keeping float needle open.
Clean out carb, adjust floats so when it shuts off fuel flow, float is parallel to base of carb. Blow through fuel pipe on carb and lift floats with your hand, you should not be able to blow through pipe when you lift the floats and float needle shuts off flow.

If your carb is overflowing, there is a definitely a problem somewhere around the floats. The float is designed to maintain the proper level of fuel in the bowl. If the float sticks, or the needle valve doesn't seat properly, you will have a carb overflow.

I have a Troy Built 5550 KW generator and I have replaced the fuel and it still will not start. Also, I replaced the spark plug and even tried puting a plug gap tester on the end of the plug wire and...


The most likely thing is the neddle valve inside the carbubator is stuck This is the valve that controls the fuel devery to the engine . The valve rests on top of the floats when the bowl is full it shuts the gas off to the carbatur bowl and when the engine sucks the fuel from the float bowl the floats drop this opens the neddle valve and lets more fuel into the bowl and dose it over again . If the valve gets stuck no fuel can get into the bowl and the engine woun't run . This is vary common with mechines that don't get used every day the gas gets old and the valve has a rubber tip at the seal and they stick. What you need to do is drop the float bowl off the carb there will be one bolt on the bottom of the bowl remove it the bowl will come down don't disturb the gasket on it . Then you will see the floats slide the pin out they will drop out and the valve is on top of that but be carful this is a five munite job but don't loose and parts there vary small and don't try to bend anything just letting the floats drop down could fix the problem and put the bowl back on so don't take the floats if you don't have to Good luck this will fix it

The carburettor is overfueling excessively. When i look into the Venturi, while revving the vehicle, i can se the literally running out, instead fo spraying out.


Not a professional, but I have came across this before!! Carbs can be a pain! I would guess that the floats need to be adjusted! You may even need new floats! What happens is the floats raise up as fuel enters them, and they push up against a needle, which tells the floats no more fuel......if the floats or are not adjusted properly, or the needles are bad.....flooding will occur! may be something else?? Just a guess! Carbs are not cheap, so if you bring it to a pro, tell them you want the floats adjusted properly! Much cheaper than a complete rebuild! rebuilding yourself is a lot of work so yeah.....start with the floats!

How do you fix a faulty fuel guage?


you have to replace the float which is located with the fuel pump. Usually the dealer only sells the floats as the auto parts store sell the pumps not floats. You can call and see if they do as all you need is the model year and engine size and they can tell you if they have the parts or need to order.

Carb and valve adjustment


Dear Craig,
Presuming that the carb is clean !
It seems that you have either set the float level incorrectly, or allowed the needle to become jammed. The float bowl should a little less than 3/4 full of fuel when the fuel is shut off by the needle and seat.
Check that the needle and seat are working correctly by blowing in the fuel pipe, and then closing the needle by hand. Check that the flow is stopped when the needle is fully raised.
The needle and seat do need to replaced from time to time, but generally last well.
If the needle and seat work, then look at the float level.
Further check to see that the floats are not filling with fuel. If this is the case, then the floats will have to be replaced as most repairs are only temporary.
When the floats are fuel logged the needle will not be raised and fuel flow to the carb will be continuous.
