Question about 2008 Ducati Monster S4Rs Testastretta

1 Answer

2008 S4RS won't start

So I've let my bike sit in the garage for about 6 months and I went oput the other day to start it up. The bike tries to fire up but it won't after about 5 seconds with the starter going. Any suggestions? It's about freezing temp out and the bike has been idle with gas in it for about 6 months.

Fuel injected right? Sounds like you have some fuel injector issues now that the gas has varnished them up. Use stabilizer in the fuel anytime the bike will sit that long without being ridden.

Cranks no start or fire add gas down throat of carbs and it back fires out pipes and carbs

bikes that sit for long periods of time need there points or electronics pick-ups serviced , rust and aluminum corrosion happens over time on these

miss fires are sure signs of this to mean out of time

and yes the carbs/tank will need a total cleaning out too

Motorcycle won't turn over, should I add fresh gas?

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enricher.
5. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
6. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
7. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
8. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and module.
9. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
10. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty ignition coil, ignition module or sensors (MAP, CMP, CKP, O2 and/or BAS).
11. Security alarm needs a reset.

I am trying to start a1987 1100sportster had running once for about half hour was popping thru carb and tailpipe tried adjusting carb helped sum i went start and now it wont.

There could be any number of reasons for the problem that you described. Your spark plugs could be fouled. Sportsters are very sensitive to this and they are notorious for not want to "clear themselves up" like Big Twins will do. Check your plugs to see if they're fouled.
Next, how long has the bike been sitting? If it has sat up for over three or four months, the carburetor is probably gummed up on the inside due the fuel in the float bowl evaporating and leaving the "varnish" behind to plug up the jets in the carb. You need to take the carb off and thoroughly clean it inside. Then, what type of carb do you have on the bike? You say you adjusted the carb but what did you adjust. If you have the stock carb, gently bottom the idle mixture screw then come back out about 1 1/2 turns. If it's an S&S carb, gently bottom the mixture screw and come back out about 3/4 turns. This is a good starting point for the adjustment on either carb. Make sure you've got fresh fuel in the tank as well. Old fuel just won't run right and todays fuel doesn't last but about 6-9 months before it's flat. Be careful about running the engine for times over 15 minutes from a cold start without a fan or something blowing on it. Sitting still and running for extended periods of time can overheat the top end.

Good Luck

I'm buying my friend's Goldwing 1200, 1986 FI. Bike has been garaged for 4yrs and I tried to start it with new battery but won't start but it cranks, has gas.

Check the kill switch rock it back and forth to be sure it is making contact. Open it up and spray it with contact cleaner that is safe for plastics available at radio shack. After sitting for four years I would start with the fuel system. New filter and NEW GAS and check the fuel lines for cracks and leaks. I have seen bikes that sat for 6 months and needing the carburetors cleaned and reset.

Xchallenge won't start when engine is hot.

Check tightness of bolt where (carb/FI) goes into intake, and where intake goes into engine. Check gaskets in those locations, if any. Sounds like heat is causing some material to distort, causing a vacuum leak.
