Question about Yamaha YZF 600 R thunder cat Motorcycles

1 Answer

Engine noise yamaha

Hi i've got a yamaha thundercat the bike runs perfect it's got alot of power it doesn't misfire or anything,i've done a major service including the timing chain, tensioner, overhauled & balanced the carbs so it's mechanically sound but the problem i'm experiencing is only at constant speed of between 4000-7000 rpm. It sounds almost like something in the engine is worn out like a bearing that's got too much clearance or a shim that's worn but we've already checked the valve clearances while we were doing the timing chain & all the clearances is in spec.

Oh and i forgot to mention that when i'm coasting at a constant speed & hearing the noise then when i accelerate abit more then the noise goes away but when i tap down to a constant speed between 4000-7000 rpm then the noise is back again... And even after the major service, timing chain & tensioner was done the noise still persists.

its possible that its valve clearances, but try to isolate at what rpm range the strange sound appears at and when is sputters, the sputtering could be due to a clogged main jet in the carb and the high frequency sound ussually means worn main bearings, but I dont think that with 3000km that would be the problem, try to identify at what rpm you hear it and post again and hopefully i might be able to help

I would be looking again at the cam chain tensioner. I have replaced 2 on my 05 so far and it was doing the same thing. the other known problem for noise in the engine like that is the valve guides are know to wear prematurely on 05's and the 03 and 04. Yamaha knows about the problem and will fix it under a one time warranty even if you do not have the extended warranty on the bike. Make sure you talk to the dealer about premature valve guide wear.

SOURCE: Yamaha gladiator ss valve cleareances

Noise seems to be generating from the rocker arm of the valve adjustment. You have to do valve adjustment only when the engine is in cold condition. ie room temperature.

At this point slip a feeler guage & adjust. first loosen the rocker arm hexagon lock nut & try adjusting the valve pressing post. You may require special tool for this!!

Does any exhaust fit a yamaha thundercat providing I have the correct link pipe?

You could fit any exhaust, But exhausts are designed for specific engines for a reason. They work best when they are used on the correct engine. Lots of things are taken into account when designing an exhaust, such as capacity, rev range and number of cylinders. An exhaust from a Honda SS50 wouldn't work on a Fireblade, so buy the correct one for your bike, it will be worth it.

Hi, Petrusm_jc7 and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Failed alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Failed main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Failed system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Failed ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
7. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.
9. Air/fuel mixture screw improperly adjusted.
10. Accelerator pump damaged or not working.
11. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.
12. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
13. Fuel tank empty.
14. The gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.
15. A failed fuel pump, pressure regulator and or fuel injectors.
16. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.
17. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.

Hi need help I've got a 2002 wr 426f but need new frame I can buy a yzf 250 2002 frame but not sure if it will fit I know ill lose my kick stand

Yes the YZ frame will work perfect.
The main difference in a WR to a YZ is the extra weight that the flywheel has on the WR's engine, other than that the bikes are about identical.
Good luck,Gary
