Question about Yamaha YZF 600 R thunder cat Motorcycles
Hi i've got a yamaha thundercat the bike runs perfect it's got alot of power it doesn't misfire or anything,i've done a major service including the timing chain, tensioner, overhauled & balanced the carbs so it's mechanically sound but the problem i'm experiencing is only at constant speed of between 4000-7000 rpm. It sounds almost like something in the engine is worn out like a bearing that's got too much clearance or a shim that's worn but we've already checked the valve clearances while we were doing the timing chain & all the clearances is in spec.
Hi, Phillip I would love to help you with your engine or chassis noise but I just loaned my brand new pair of listening ears to your local dealer's chief technician so he could take your bike for a test ride and give you his professional opinion and estimate about your noise and repair cost. SOURCE: Bike wont start
Remove battery and get it charged the tested..More likely its failed. when engine is running check battery voltage it should be 12.8 to 14.2 volts with good battery

its possible that its valve clearances, but try to isolate at what rpm range the strange sound appears at and when is sputters, the sputtering could be due to a clogged main jet in the carb and the high frequency sound ussually means worn main bearings, but I dont think that with 3000km that would be the problem, try to identify at what rpm you hear it and post again and hopefully i might be able to help

Testimonial: "alexande rocks!!!"
I would be looking again at the cam chain tensioner. I have replaced 2 on my 05 so far and it was doing the same thing. the other known problem for noise in the engine like that is the valve guides are know to wear prematurely on 05's and the 03 and 04. Yamaha knows about the problem and will fix it under a one time warranty even if you do not have the extended warranty on the bike. Make sure you talk to the dealer about premature valve guide wear.

Noise seems to be generating from the rocker arm of the valve adjustment. You have to do valve adjustment only when the engine is in cold condition. ie room temperature.
At this point slip a feeler guage & adjust. first loosen the rocker arm hexagon lock nut & try adjusting the valve pressing post. You may require special tool for this!!
