SOURCE: 89 Harley FLTCU oil coming from the crankcase breather tube and

This is an age old problem for the Harley engine. In you 89 model, the crankcase breaths from behind the oil pump through a tube that runs to the backside of the air filter assembly. Most people that I know, simply remove the tube coming up to the air filter and block the hole in the air filter assembly backing plate. At the breather, they run a short hose to just behind the transmission and cut it off there. This is similar to the earlier Shovelhead engine and the way it breathes. In 1994, Harley went to the "head breather system" which was better but it still gets oil into the air filter assembly.

There is one thing I saw on the aftermarket assessories market once called a "CatchCan". The breather tube ran to it and it seperated the oil from the air and the held it in a small container to be emptied on a regular basis. I have never used one nor have I ever seen one so all I can tell you is what the book said. Matter of fact, I cannot remember where I saw it now. Custom Chorme catalog, maybe. Good Luck, Steve

Probably just lets you know you have the key in the ignition and it is switched on. However, take a look at some of these review videos.

1969 triumph t120r has spark and fuel going to motor but wont start

180 DEGREES OUT OF TIME??? IF YOU HAVE SPARK AND FUEL. AFTER REMOVING ALL SPARK PLUGS HAVE SOMEONE PUT THERE FINGER OVER SPARKPLUG HOLES AND CK THAT PLUG IS SPARKING WHEN ON COMPRESSION "WHEN KICKING HER OVER". IF NOT SWITCH POINT WIRES GOING TO COILS.

My 1969 triumph bonneville keep burning sparkplugs ( every part is new )

Just so we\'re on the same page, by "burnt spark plugs", you mean the porcelain tip is white with no sooty or oily residue, right?

Could be the ignition is retarded too much (with will make an engine run hot)

Spark plug gaps that are too close will not fire lean fuel mixtures.

Wrong carb jetting/adjustment.

Here is a spark plug diagnosis chart:

By "burnt spark plug", I\'m assuming you mean what the chart refers to as "overheating"

Oil seeping into air box

The crankcase breather ,for emission purposes, runs from the motor to the air box so the blow by is burned in the motor. Many bikes have what is called a pollution tube that runs from the box to just in front of the rear wheel. This is to drain the **** that does not get sucked into the motor (oil, water, etc) Place a pie tin or pan on the ground and pull the plug out of the tube and all the horrible gack from the air box will drain into the pan. This is periodic maintenance that never seems to get mentioned anywhere. Now you know.

a small amount of oil from the crankcase vent hose under hard acceleration is most likely normal.American bikes don't leak oil, they mark their spot!
