You have a couple of bent shift forks. Not a repair for the novice. The problem will not get better only worse. Obviously the dealer can handle it but $$$$ will dance in your head. Ask around for a bike repair guy in your area. Often a dealer mechanic also repairs bikes at his home. This will mean about 1/2 the dealer cost.

V star 650 pops out of 5th gear into 4th gear around 55 mph

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Shifter pawl improperly adjusted.
2. Shifter drum improperly adjusted or damaged.
3. Shifter engaging parts/dogs badly worn or rounded.
4. Shifter forks bent.
5. Damaged gears.

Hi, probably you have a high milleage engine, for what you describe (black smoke) you have a very rich fuel/air mix ,
About it take a wille to lower revs, that's because the valves are note settingg properly. You'll probably need to have them reconditioned .
good luck

3rd gear har d to put in

Im not sure how you ride your bike but if you "beat on it shifting without cluch sometimes the fork in the transmission gets bent...this is the only reason that would cause hard shifting besides wrong gear lube

Gets stuck between 4th and 5th

The shift rail fork ends are likely worn. There are fork contact/wear pads that ride in the gear shift sliding collars, and over time, or from low gearbox oil levels/insufficient lubrication, these pads wear, allowing "slop" and preventing the gears from engaging fully. I'd check the brngs, synchro rings and the dog clutch teeth, too. If you see metal/brass or aluminum shavings in the case drain plug, oil or on the bottom of the gearcase...that isn't a good sign. This sounds like a trans issue, not a clutch issue.

While riding, the 4th and 5th gears do not engage promptly when you clutch and shift the gear. It sort of goes into neutral as one disengages the clutch and accelerate and then falls in place (ie 4th or...

This behavior is the symptom that your clutch plates are getting worn out. Since power is transmitted from the cam shaft to the front sprocket (smaller dia) is better at lower gears but once the rpm increases the clutch plates do not catch up with the cams rotation, hence slipping at higher gears & in between 4th & 5th gears the pulling power of the engine seems to go to neutral before engaging again. Check your clutch plates as well as the sprocket-chain- rear sprocket for wearing out of the gear teeth & replace if required. You will get back full power & acceleration as when the bike was new.............sodeep

If it is hard to start after it stalls, it is probably getting too much fuel. Could be dirt in the float valve. Also try running a hotter spark plug

Hi there anyone, can't get any gears on my honda cr250 1991 model .please help .thanks shorty.

If you mean that you can't shift into any gears from neutral then you have a bent shift fork. Did you strike a small tree on the left side of the bike while riding in the woods? Bumped the gearbox on a large rock? Is the foot shift lever bent at all?.... Replacing a bent shift fork is easy if you have the special tools and the know-how to do it. Most riders would shy away from attempting it. You would need to remove the engine then tear it down into about 75 pieces to get to the bad fork. Check the gear sets operated by the bent fork. If gear dogs are broken then it is best to replace the broken gear and the gear it engages with.
