Mine has the same problem.....99 katana....

When it's cold it idles perfectly after choking the cold start...after about 30 minutes of stop and go traffic the idle stays around 2500-3000 unless I feather the clutch to bring it down...then it stays around 1000 until I throttle it even a little....

Ok, it can be a couple things. First of all, look for any cracked vacuum hoses, sounds like a vacuum leak, tighten all the clamps holding the carbs on. Other than that, see if all the slides are working, and the throttle goes back against the stop when idling. Make sure the choke isn't sticking on, Katanas are notorious for choke cable problems

There should be an idle adjustment located behind one of the side fairings, its usually a black dial mounted to the case somewhere low.

How do I lower rpm so idle is correct? it's stable around 5k rpm which is too high

Yea, that is way too high. Thankfully your bike is nice and old so idle adjustment is simple. Look for a knob in between the 2nd and 3rd cylinders carburetors. This should be accessible without removing any bodywork, but I'm not certain with your bike. You should set your idle to something between 1~2k rpm when the bike is fully warmed up. If your carb hasn't been serviced in awhile having it idle at 2k rpm will be more stable.

1996 suzuki katana not staying on after starting

If it has been sat with fuel in it for more than about 9 months, the problem is most likely to be the carbs. When fuel evaporates it leaves a gummy deposit in the float bowl. The first start can allow this to get in to the jets and cause blockages.

Check your plugs are not breaking down under stress. As the problem happens in all gears and you have just changed the plugs, it is the most likely fix. But it could be your ignition advance system. So you may need a new igniter box. Good luck, hope this helps.

Hi, Timothy_towd "ABSOLUTELY" you need to go through all 4 carbs set the proper float height and then have them synced for this scenario you will need your service/owners manual if you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Yamaha, despair not, for a mere zero $0 you can download another one. For more information about your issue and valuable "FREE" downloads that you will need please click on the blue links below. Good luck and have a wonderful day.

hi, if the air filter is oil soaked or DIRTY. these are troublesome, if the oil dries-up (not pulling enough FUEL into the carburetter, too much AIR). if too much oil higher FUEL COSUMPTION or WILL NOT START (WETTING THE SPARK PLUG (S)). gerry

turn the cable adjuster back to its original position ie between 600-700 rpm look to the left hand side of the carbs you will see a large adjusting screw on a metal bracket whilst engine is running turn inwards towards rear wheel until between 1000 - 1500 rpm remember to warm engine first as rpm will rise if idle is set with a cold engine as the engine warms up when riding

My 2000 suzuki katana has a high idle when its hot

This is a fairly common problem with performance bikes. The problem comes from your thermostat. The thermostat is designed to open and close at a certain temp. What I suspect is happening is that your thermostat is opening too early for the bike to get to operating temp, hence the long time to warm up. Once you open up the bike warms up and the oil viscosity thins to operating temp and the engine revs more freely. Now your idle screws are set for a "cold" bike and revs high.

The other side is that the oil you are using may not be designed for your bike. Often people put performance synthetic oils in their bikes to perform better, but the production bikes are designed for thicker oils. Oils like 5w40 will be very thin allowing your bike to rev faster due to thinner oil, but you are causing extra wear on the parts due to less oil barrier.

First I suggest make sure you have the correct spec oil for you bike, then check that you have the correct thermostat in your cooling system. A performance bikes usual operating temp is between 95-105 deg C. This means your thermostat should only open at about 88deg C to start the regulation process.

You have carburetor issues my friend, take those things apart and clean them. Probably time to rebuild them if they have never been apart yet.
