Hi Jim, and the usual suspects are:
1. Spark plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
2. Spark plug cables in bad condition or leaking.
3. Spark plug gap to close or to wide.
4. Faulty ignition coil, module and or sensor.
5. Battery nearly discharged.
6. Damaged wire or loose connections at battery terminals especially the ground cable at BOTH ends, ignition coil, or plug between ignition sensor and module.
7. Intermittent short circuit due to damaged wire insulation.
8. Water or dirt in fuel system, carburetor or filter.
9. Fuel tank vent system plugged or carburetor vent line closed off.
10. Carburetor controls misadjusted.
11. Damaged carburetor.
12. Loose or dirty ignition module connector at crankcase.
13. Faulty MAP, CKP, and or CMP sensors.
14. Incorrect valve timing.
15. Weak or broken valve springs.
16. Damage intake or exhaust valve.

Random cylinder misfire


Scan the computer for trouble codes, unless that is where you got the random misfire code. It may point out the problem. Misfires are usually fuel/air, spark (ignition), or cylinder compression related. The pcm senses a loss of power through the crank sensor, noting the crankshaft doesn't turn as fast as it should. If it cannot isolate it to a particular cylinder, it will set the random misfire code.
Would be good to know what fuel pressure is as a start. Note that cold start problems may be fuel related, as the engine requires more fuel on a cold running engine. If the coolant temperature sensor is out of whack, the computer may not realize it is a cold engine. Just a possibility.

check the cam lobes,valve springs, the valves them selves especialy the inlet, without looking if its a push rod or chain, but check the cam shaft mechanism ie chain

88 softail custom starts up on one cylinder and only runs on two after about 5 miles. Changed plugs , leads & coil. Can you help


Sorry but I don't know anything about the electronics on the newer Twin Cam engines. I work on the carburetor equipped Evos and earlier model bikes. The first thing I'd do is to check the compression when the engine is cold. Check both cylinders and get the reading off the running cylinder to compare the not-running cylinder. If the compression is lower by about 15-20 psi, you may have a blown head gasket. This is one of the three things that you must have in order for any internal combustion engine to run. If the compression is alright, you need to check for fuel to the cylinder and ignition spark to the cylinder. The other two components necessary to run.

Someone told me that is running on one cylinder how can i check this and how can it be fixed


start it up cold, and feel the exhaust pipes as it runs, and keep checking both near the engine. (Becareful as they should get hot quickly) A cold pipe means a dead cylinder. Then you need to verify three things...
does it have compression?
is it getting fuel?
does it have spark?

300-6 cylinder runs fine cold but the farther you drive it developes a dead miss ; all tune up has been done


It may be your ignition coil. After the engine has run awhile, the coil gets hot, and starts to break up. Have you isolated this miss to 1 cylinder or does it seem to affect all cylinders?

I am not familiar with the model but from your description it is a common rail diesel. You omitted to mention whether it is direct injection or indirect.

Given if the engine and cold start and injection equipment are all serviceable the engine would spring into life on all cylinders almost simultaneously.

Assuming the injection equipment and the cold start is serviceable, the only thing that will then prevent a cylinder firing is an engine problem, namely a lack of compression.

It would be interesting to know if the misfire is always the same cylinders and if those are on the same bank? If the engine is an indirect type the cylinders are particularly sensitive and prone to not starting if things aren't perfect or almost perfect. The heat loss from this design is great and so a cold start aid is necessary even in relatively mild weather. Direct injection is much more forgiving and tolerant of imperfections and good examples will start well down to freezing point without aid from a cold start.

A compression test and a cylinder efficiency test on a cold engine would indicate the condition of the cylinders and if they are found to be equal within a very small margin it can be assumed the problem lies elsewhere and the fuel and cold start systems should be revisited.

There is incidentally, a condition known as tappet jacking. With a cold engine the oil pressure can be abnormally high during and after starting so it is possible for the hydraulic lifters to jack the valves from the seats if the springs are just a little weak. Conversely while an engine stands overnight the valve spring pressure on those valves left open when the engine stops can squeeze the oil from the lifters so on starting those valves open significantly less than the others. While not exactly causing a misfire it does result in a cylinder that is temporarily producing less power. This condition does not always produce the expected noise and it can take a significant amount of time to rectify itself.
