SOURCE: 2007 honda crf 250 r hard starting when cold ,

There is a proper way to start an engine. Most bikes have four controls to assist in starting.

  • The choke, used when the engine is cold. Pull the red knob for choke.
  • The " Hot Start " Lever, used when the engine is hot. Pull the lever to lean the fuel mix when the engine has been running.
  • The de-compression lever, always used.
  • The throttle, used to prime the cylinder.
Don't kick, instead, push the kick lever downward. You will feel the back pressure as the piston is going upward on the compression stroke to the point the pressure is great enough that the kick lever "locks up". You are very close to TDC. NOW, pull in the de-compression lever. Push the kick lever a little bit more to get the piston past TDC. Now release the de-compression lever. Give the throttle a 1/4 turn then let it snap closed. A diaphragm in the carb gives a shot of gas when this is done. DO NOT do this multiple times because you will flood the engine. Leave the throttle closed when kicking. A flooded engine will often backfire. Now give a strong kick through the full sweep of the kick start lever. Quickly get your foot off the kick lever at the end of the kick to avoid any chance of "kickback" from the kick lever. This happens in the case of a misfire, aka > backfire. It can be very painful, and can even break a leg. I am serious about that. Repeat the process (but without the throttle priming), until the bike starts. Go ahead and give it another primer shot after the 5th kick attempt. A good battery, a clean spark plug, a clean carb and clean air filter will also aid in starting.

Why does my 2007 Crf 450x start but wont stay running

I don't know the CRF 450X, but my Helix had a solenoid that shut off the gas automatically when the ignition was turned off, and did the same when the wire came off the solenoid. Sometimes those solenoids fail, too, and replacing them is the only option. If the wiring is good (test it first!!!) you can tell a bad solenoid by holding your hand on it and turning the ignition on and off. If you don't feel a thump, it's bad.

The carb has a bypass that allows the throttle to squirt fuel into the carb when you roll on the throttle. That will get the bike to start even if the fuel solenoid has blocked the main flow. Then, of course, the bike dies as soon as the fuel from the accelerator pump is gone.

Other possibilities include sludge in the tank, a plugged fuel filter, or too much water in the gas. If any of those happen, StarTron can sometimes eat the sludge and nutralize the water and get you going. I like SeaFoam a lot but StarTron works better for me.

Good luck!

Problems starting the CRF450R 07 even after valves done, plus rewired stater. I've just gone from the usual cr250 2 stroke & all I ask seem to tell me the CRF needs getting used to,is this the case??

An 07 crf 450 doesnt have a starter motor. Are you sure about the year and model?
Starting a Thumper is not at all likd starting a two stroke. 2 strokes need a little flick on the kickstart and a little blip of the throttle. 4 stroke thumpers need a long, hard, deliberate kick and absolutely NO throttle. You may want to rest your right hand on the bar clamps to start it just to make sure your not adding fuel. Thumpers have a pretty big accelerator pump that can flood quickly and easily. Once you're used to it, it will become easier

the same thing happened to me its probably your valve clearance and need to be shimmed or if they worn really bad they need to be replaced..regarding roll starting your bike it damages your bike further and your engine could seize.

My 2005 450x is hard to start and when it does start it will not stay running

Install a new stock spark plug. Clean the air filter then remove and clean the carb. Drain the gas tank, clean out rust and any trash, and remove the fuel valve to clean the internal tank filters. Now install an in-line fuel filter in addition to the tank filter.

After six kicks go ahead and twist the throttle again for a second priming. A good battery, a clean spark plug, a clean carb and clean air filter will also aid in starting. Note that not all carbs have a power valve. When a power valve is not present you should crack the throttle open only 1/8 inch from closed on each kick.

Are the frames the same? 05 crf 250r and a 07 crf

No. Honda has a very crafty way of making two different models look like they have parts that will interchange, when - in reality - they are totally different. That goes for not only the major components like frames, but for nearly every part, on nearly every model. Very little in the way of parts interchangeability.

My 2005 Crf 250 r will not start by kicking when cold if you roll it it will fire right up like it should runs great after you get it started the first time what are some simple things that i could try to...

Add water to the battery. Enough to cover the plates in each cell.
The battery may be on its' last legs. If you don't have a 1 or 2 amp charger, push start the bike and ride for a few hours. This should charge the battery < IF > it will still take a charge. If it won't take a charge and hold it then it's time for a new battery.

The reason you can push start the bike is that the flywheel is able to spin fast enough to generate enough current to provide spark. Kick starting won't do that. Just because a battery has SOME power does't mean it has ENOUGH power to do as needed.

Hard starting

Hi,

You need to inspect the valve clearances. It is common for the intake valves to wear a little.
Inspection of the clearances should take place at 15 hour intervals if you are racing the bike.

When the valves leak, the bike does not maintain compression and kick starting becomes tough. The fact that the bike starts when being bumped, shows a loss of compression.

An easy DIY compression test is to remove the spark plug, place a finger over the plug hole and press down on the kick start lever. The air should be forced past your finger at a high rate and you should hear the air escapeing. You must not be able to prevent any air from escaping.

Good luck

Jon
