Question about 2000 kawasaki ZX-9 R Ninja

1 Answer

Im not getting any spark, what are some ways to troubleshoot spark on my ZX9

I went out about a month and a half ago and started my bike, the next day i went out to start it and it would turn over and over just fine but it would not fire, i bought new spark plugs gapped them and changed them, still no fire. I was told to clean the carbs real good and drain the fuel out of the bike, blow out all the fuel lines, and put fresh gas in it. I did all of this and it still wont fire up. I took a spark plug coil off and there wasnt any spark inside of it when i turned it over, so i took a spark plug out and hooked it back to the coil and touched it to the frame and there was no spark at all, checked all the other spark plugs the same way and there is no spark. Please help me find out whats wrong with my bike, its really starting to make me go alittle nuts. Thank so much for you time and help.

Hi, Jerome and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting, leaking, spark plug cable connections loose check for spark leakage in the dark.
6. Faulty ignition coil or CDI or electronic control module.
7. Faulty CKP, CMP, or BAS sensor.
8. Faulty ignition switch.
9. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
10. Security alarm failing to disarm needs reset

Sounds like what you realy need to do is remove the carb jets and give them a good clean , this if I am right is the twin V 8 valve engine with twin Klhein carbs , make sure also your air filter is not dirty and check tank fuel filter ,, other than that you may be intrested in the manuel obtainable from this site
hope this helps good luck .. and Live long and prosper lol .. Regards Vortash

you could possibly have a bad fuel petcock they sometimes work there way out and cause fuel cut off to half the carburetors. The vent tube on tob of the tank can also become blocked. You can check it buy sucking on the tube and making sure you can **** air out of it. You may or may not have inline filters under the tank. If it's a 93 there is no fuel pump.

Its either not getting fuel, poss blocked mainjet, or float needle valve, do you have a constant flow of fuel from the tank, is the bike smoking exsessivly, sounding quieter than it used to do? Maybe the exhaust has become blocked, this was a common factor on this bike, remove exhaust look up exhaust port towards piston, with the piston at the top clean the port with a sharp object scrapeing away all the unburned carbon, start bike up without exhaust and check how it runs,

gravity fed their is no fuel pump. if you do have a filters it will be inline between tank and carbs. you could have sediment in your tank also.
