SOURCE: how to remove starter clutch on a 1998 Dyna Low

The starter clutch is an integral part of the starter assembly itself. You must remove the starter and disassemble it to get the "overrunning clutch" out. First take the starter off the bike. Then, remove the two long bolts and take the starter motor off of the drive housing. Then remove the bolts that hold the drive housing together. The overrunning clutch will come out of the drive housing. You will probably have to take the bearings off the original clutch and reinstall them on the new part. Reassemble the starter and reinstall it on the bike.

The starter clutch needs to be replaced. An alternator sgop will usually rebuild these for 1/2 of a new one. Nippendenso .A thumbs up would be greatly appreciated if this answer is helpful to you.

(the gear above the clutch)

The gear is larger in diameter that the hole in the bearing that the shaft passes through.

2003 dyna starter turns but wont engage, new battery fitted

Hi Anonymous, lift up rubber boot on positive cable to starter, unplug starter relay wire usually green, with a jumper wire connected to positive battery cable starter stud, touch blade connecter on starter where starter relay wire was removed. If starter engages and turns over engine then your starter relay is bad. If starter activates but does not engage then your starter drive/clutch is bad. Good luck

96 dyna glide. how does the oil flow to n from primary cover also starter clicks but doesnt spin

the oil dose not flow in the primary, the chain move it and slings the oil around to circulate and lube all parts. sounds like you may need a new starter clutch drive. this is in the starter. Fran [mechanic]

What is the best replacement clutch starter i have a 2003 dyna wide glide and im having a problem with it

I assume that you're talking about the starter clutch or over running clutch inside the starter. I've always replaced them with OEM stock parts and I've had good luck with them. Of course, if you want to use another part, as long as you stick with a maker that is known for their quality parts, you should be Ok with that as well.

Good Luck
Steve

How do you remove the starter from a 2001 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic? Thank you for your help. John

To remove the starter, first, disconnect the negative cable from the battery. The drain and remove the outer primary. Remove the bolt that holds the jackshaft on and remove the jackshaft. If you can't get it out, you may have to remover the adjuster plate in the center of the clutch assembly. Loosen the nut and slide the clutch assembly off just slightly. The nut has LEFT HANDED threads in it.

Then, go to the right side of the bike and take off everything that is in the way of the starter, exhaust system, etc. Disconnect the battery cable from the starter and take the two large bolts out of the starter. The starter comes right out.

How do u change the drive belt on a 2001 dyna super glide

This is a major job. It requires that the entire primary drive, including the engine compensator sprocket, primary chain, clutch assembly, inner primary cover, and starter be removed from the engine. The rear wheel will also have to come out. Luckily, the way the Dyna frame is designed, you won't have to pull the swing arm off to change the belt, just remove the left shock absorber. You will need a torque wrench(es) that will retorque the engine sproket nut to 150-165 foot pound and the clutch assembly nut to 60-80 foot pound in the LEFT HANDED direction. You'll also need some way to lock the primary up while you apply these torques. We use a locking bar to do this which is simply a bar long enough to properly place in the teeth on the engine sprocket and the clutch drum to lock the assembly up while applying the torque. The engine does not have enough compression to all for the application of this amount of torque.

Here again, this is quite an involved job. I would suggest that you purchase a H-D service manual. It's far too involved for me to give you step by step instructions via this forum.

BTW: You didn't mention why you wanted to change the final drive belt. I wouldn't mess with changing it until I noticed cracks forming along the inside lugs or they started breaking off. The job is difficult and the belt is EXPENSIVE. I've seen these belts run 50-60K miles with no problem.
