I guess my problem is how to remove the left side cover. The right side cover comes off with the key, but the left side has the ignition.

Hi,
Remove the Left side cover (as you are sitting on the bike).
Disconnect the negative cable first (left), then the positive. Remove the battery holder bolt (above battery). Lift up on the front of the battery and remove the vent tube. The battery will then come right out.
When installing new battery, make sure the vent tube is attached, and connect the positive cable before the negative. Sparks and batteries don't get along...
Please let me know if this helped.

    Hi,
There is an allen bolt that is located on the bottom edge that needs to be removed first. Then the cover will pop off the grommets when pulled straight off. Make sure you have a firm grasp of both sides before pulling. Otherwise, if you pull at an angle, you may snap off one of the pegs.

1989 vt1100c motor oil to reduce engine ticking

20W-50 is good for muffling sounds in the motor. Depending on the loudness the ticking could be caused by Exhaust gaskets (o-rings) from the head to the head pipe(ticking sound ((at idle))and popping or backfiring on deceleration). When automatic cam chain adjusters are going bad you get a clicking sound, or worse, hydraulic valve lifters (for zero tolerance) going bad. Lifters tend to be a loud clacking sound.

My 89 honda shadow vt1100c When i idle my fan doesnt turn on and overheats. how do i fix my fan and what could the problem be

Possibly the thermoswitch. Usually located on the radiator. If you ground the wire that connects to the switch and your fan comes on, the switch is bad. Also check your fan fuse.

Valve adjust on 03 honda shadow vt1100c

If the same as 1985-1998 VT 1100 - you have a hydraulic valves, so NO adjusting, if Noise - valve tappets clogged, take out engine oil, use cleaning oil, start engine and run it till tapping goes away.
Then use Motul 10-40W, this one have add of cleaner in and better shifting.
