Question about 2000 Harley Davidson XL 1200 C Sportster Custom

1 Answer

No Electronics Son has a 2005 Sportster 883. While driving at 60MPH all electronics went dead. Never had any prior problems. Son is not much of a mechanic, but I'm slowly helping him learn, but I've never worked on a Harley. Any ideas where I should begin to troubleshoot this electrical problem?

I have yet to pinpoint the cause of my electrical problem, but I realize I only requested a starting point and I have learned more about this machine. The battery terminals appear to be tight, but plan to look closer into this problem over the weekend. Also checked the 6 small fuses and they were all good. There was one larger plug in fuse that I removed, but unable to see the fuseable link like in the smaller fuses to determine if it was the problem.

    Any other ideas?

Thanks again for your help. I can now see I will need an owners manual as one did not come with the used Sportster my son purchased from Republic Harley, in Stafford. Several of the items you mentioned were greek to me. I have a volt meter and will begin to trace it down. Thanks!

Sorry, I didn't mean to hurt any feelings and do actually very much appreciate the guidence. It's just frustrating without a manual or any experience with Harleys.

Start with the battery/cables ... remember .... on Harleys... everything vibrates and loosens.... Tighten your electrical connections,,,,,

Its a starting point ......

Electrical problems can be the toughest to rundown, especially if you are workin without a shop manual. You will also need a volt and multimeter (possibly)

The clue for me is it went dead while operating. Suggests something vibrated loose, or wires crossed/shorted out, or possible a sensor went bad , like a bank angle sensor or crank position sensor. Still - start with the simplest and disconnect, then reconnect the battery and check it for charge. Check all your wiring for shorts. Good luck - keep me updated

my fault... i got too technical. Every Harley has a bank angle sensor that shuts off the bike when it dips below 50 degrees. Sometimes they malfunction. Its not a problem that happens often, I just mentioned it. Chances are its a loose connection or a short. Just take your time and trace all the wiring you can makin sure there are no bare wires and everything is tight. You have plenty of support here, or at hdforums

It's more likely that your battery terminals are dirty or have become loose. Clean and check your battery terminals. If I recall correctly (I had a 1993 Sportster as well years ago), I had that happen a few times. Best of luck to you!

Make sure your battery cables are tight at both ends. The ground connection on these bikes has a habit of vibrating loose.
