Sounds like a vacum issue with the tank, try starting the bike with the filler open, when you shut the bike off of no more fuel leaking then you may have a vacum issue with the tank. I have seen cases where the vent tube in the tank is clooged and it wont allow the fuel to return to the tank properly.

sounds like your fuel line inside tank has rubbed a hole in it on the side of the tank this is a common problem. Need to pull hole fuel unit out of tank to replace plastic line.

When you first turn the key on, you should hear the fuel pump come on and build pressure - it will be a ticking noise. When the pressure is low the pump will run continuously, when the pressure comes up, the ticking will slow down and the pump will stop. The fuel pump is located behind the lowest cover on the left side of the bike - but you can hear it normally with the cover in place. If it's not working, check the fuse - it's in the same area as the pump if I recall correctly.

Also - check your fuel filter - it's under the seat behind the first plastic cover you'll see when you take the seat off.

If none of that works, you might want to drain the tank and pull the petcoc(k) and check the filters on it.

1998 road king fuel injected seems like after 150-200 miles the bike does not want to idle and kills. I can get it it to start but have to keep the throttle up to keep it running even when shifting. ...

So the problem only occurs at idle. For some reason the injection is allowing too much fuel at idle. That explains the black smoke. At highway speed the engine needs the fuel but at idle it should have a lot less fuel so it loads up and blows black.

You may have one injector that doesn't seat fully so it dumps too much gas at idle. Try some brand of injection cleaner you can trust in your bike and see if that fixes it. If not, you better get it in to the dealer because it will be dumping contaminants into the engine oil.

Bike died

I was on my way home from work when I stopped at the stop light and when I went to take off my bike just died. It started right back up but as I gave it gas it would die again. I managed to roll it out of traffic into a parking space. I tried the choke the fuel valve, but nothing worked. It would idle, but as soon as I would give it some gas it would just sputter and die. I got a ride to my house where I got my truck and came back to my bike. I started it up and soon as I gave it some gas, it died. I started it up again and gave it some gas and then it started working just fine. I revved it a few times, but it wouldn't die again. I drove it home and didn't have a problem. It seems to be running fine now. What the heck?? It only has 693 miles on it. It has almost a full tank of gas. What could possibly be wrong?,It's fuel or air related. If your bike didn't have any issues at all, no minor symptoms until it fell on its face like that, I'd wager something worked its way loose. Could be something is preventing fuel from reaching the carbs or something rattled loose in your airbox or carb boots. If something blocked off your air filter it would show those symptoms, or if you suddenly had a huge vacuum leak from a carb boot coming undone. I'd start by verifying you have fuel in the carbs by attaching a length of tubing and opening the drain screw at the bottom. Fuel comes out of your carbs, look elsewhere. No fuel, find out why it's not getting to your carbs. Perhaps your fuel line kinked.,,,
