Question about 1991 Yamaha FZR 600

91 yamaha fzr engine turns but wont start

Before storing my bike for the winter it would require a shot of ether to start when cold, fine when warm. After storage I have fresh gas, good spark and the bike will not start. The engine will turn but wont start. Battery is charged. Every once and awile it will backfire if I try to use ether but not every time.

I appreciate your suggestion but the floats are all brand new and crystal clean, I did open the carb and check after you made that suggestion to see if they did gum up a little but they are still brand new

  • j69bigdaddy Mar 11, 2009

yes there was ample gas in the bowls and when i put it all together the fuel pump did refil it

  • j69bigdaddy Mar 11, 2009

I may add that it will not even fire with ether or pop start

  • j69bigdaddy Mar 12, 2009

I have pulled out every spark plug numerous time's to prove to friends and held it to metal and there was spark from each, this is why i am stumped, i have air, gas, and spark all the equation for as you said pop

  • j69bigdaddy Mar 14, 2009

ok today i went and got new plugs and still nothing but they are all sparking granted better than the others but still nothing :(

  • j69bigdaddy Mar 16, 2009

ok after some tinkering and major cleaning of the carbs it finaly started after a bit. But now the rpm sound louder than they should be and it seems to have less nut. My friend says it may be the manifold gasket i was wondering if you had any thoughts about it ?

The floats in the carb are stuck. you can try lightly tapping on the carb with a screwdriver that should do the trick.

hello again you say the floats are brand new.when u took them apart again was there gas in there?

  • Scott Clifford Mar 12, 2009

you must have no spark then.ether makes everything go pop.

  • Scott Clifford Mar 16, 2009

hey again the next time you take out the plugs spray a little carb cleaner in each cyclinder. just a little. then put the plugs back in and tell me if i goes pop then.

My fzr 400 will start when it's cool engine and when it's hot will not start ineed help

If your driving and it gets warmed up and shuts off and wont restart it may be a float problem in your carbs. The float needle will get corroded and let gas constantly flow while the bike is on and while you try to start it after it cools you burn the extra gas seeming.like it only starts cold. Ive had personal experience here. New float needles.

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enricher.
5. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
6. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
7. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
8. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and module.
9. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
10. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty ignition coil, ignition module or sensors (MAP, CMP, CKP, O2 and/or BAS).
11. Faulty fuel pump fuse or relay.
11. Security alarm needs a reset.

The bike won't start after winter storage but the battery is good so, I assume that I need to clean the carbulater.

Next storage cycle, add some fuel stabilizer to the remaining gas; works well. Try giving the engine a shot of engine starting fluid (ether). Buy it at any parts store or most department stores.
