Yamaha TTR 250, Idling Problem

I rebuilt by carburator now it idles wrong. When idling it revs up and down spuraticly, tried adjusting all cables and throttle/pilot screws. Don't know w.t.f.

You might have an air leak somewhere. chack to make sure you did not loose any o-rings from the diaphragm cap or the pilot screw. also check that there are no cracks on the intake boot. VERY LIGHT sprays of the either or carb cleaner can lead you to the source.

Check the inlet manifold rubber has not seperated from the aluminium part of the manifold ,this is very common on the ttr 250 and will cause the exact problem you have,if it is seperated either replace it or repair it with some good quality rtv sealant avoid sillicone sealant as it is not petrol resistant and will turn to jelly.adam

Idling speed


Hi, Anonymous the carburetor throttle shaft wheel has two cables the cable closest to the right side of the bike is the throttle cable and the one closest to the left side is the idle cable. Right about the middle between the two is the idle adjustment bolt it faces out towards the air filter end of the carb . The engine should be at operating temperature with the enrichener off to set the idle between 950-1050 rpm. Turn the idle adjustment bolt clockwise to increases idle speed and counterclockwise to decrease idle speed. If you have access to your air fuel mixture bolt you may adjust it as well if not there is a video below on how to gain access, make sure you start with clean or new spark plugs. Gently turn the air fuel mixture bolt clockwise until it starts to bottom out "STOP" do not over tighten as it will damage the taper on the end, now back it out 2 full turns to establish a starting point start the engine and check the idle rpm's and adjust the idle adjustment bolt accordingly for 950-1050 rpm if necessary, adjust the air fuel mixture bolt 1/4 turn at a time and let the engine settle for about 10 seconds, clockwise for a leaner mixture and counterclockwise for a richer mixture you are seeking the highest rpm your air fuel mixture bolt can acquire without going past 3 full turns from bottom then readjusting the idle adjustment bolt back down to 950-1050 rpm If you can not detect any rpm change and can not stall the engine by turning the air-fuel mixture bolt all the way in then your pilot/low-speed jet is too big. Final adjustment should be made with a clean air filter mounted to the carburetor. Yamaha ttr 250 carb faults


Hi, Npautos and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Float needle and seat sticking.
5. Float level too low.
6. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
7. Idle adjusting screw set too low.
8. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
9. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
10. Slow fuel jet clogged.
11. Faulty fuel pump.

Revs up and down at idle , overheats and bogs down at low revs

1. Extremely lean fuel mixture.
2. Dirt, rust, water, or ethanol sludge in the fuel system.
3. Sticky throttle cables.
4. Multiple carburetors not in synchronization.
5. TPS sensor out of adjustment or faulty.
6. Wrong spark plugs for the type of service.
7. Throttle bodies not in synchronization (FI)
8. Faulty O2 sensor.
9. Clogged, stuck, or faulty IAC valve.
10. Aftermarket components not compatible with ECM.

I TOUCH THE CARBURATOR OF MY SON TTR 50.. WHAT CAN I DO TO PUT BACK STOCK SETTING...???


the carburetor settings are easy : 1- locate the screw mixture air /fuel 2- wind the screw all the way in 3- unwind the screw 1 1/2 turn and this should be sufficient to set the carburetor back to its original settings for the air/fuel mixture . 4- as for the idling screw , wind it down to suit the revs required

My 1987 yamaha 80cc big wheel will not idle. would like to know how to adjust air mixture and idle screws?


well first try the choke if it runs good when you pull the choke even a little then you need less air, if it runs worse then you need less air, in is less air and out is more air thats the air mixture screw.
idle screw is self explanitory start turning it if it idles up then your turning it up if it idles down then you are idling down usually in is up.

Idle problem. the bike wont stay idling, i adjusted the screws to 1.5 turns out, and tightened the throttle cable coming from the throttle and still doesnt idle without working the throttle.. timing maybe?


The timing is factory set and doesnt change, does it have the idle screw? I assume the one you adjusted is the air mixture screw at 1.5, you shouldnt adjust with the cable as it might cause the engine to rev on full lock, it needs a small amount of freeplay

Carba/f ratio needs adjusting and use of the choke will help keep the idle circuits clean.

Bike idles, but with a little throttle it jumps to high rev and wont come back down to idle


You need to oil your cables first....They make a gadget to help you do this...it clamps around the end of the cable, and you spray oil into a provided hole for a spray nozzle tube...Then see if the cables are unstuck by turning the throttle grip back and forth for awhile....start it and see if that helped....if not you may need to replace the cable(s)...I doubt that the slide in the carb is hanging up...or valve.If this doesn't work notify me.

Idle speed problems


Hi Walker14,

You have to sync thecarbs and also you will have to reset the air-fuel mixture screws.
One of the carburators should be factory adjusted, I dont wn a kawasaki but I own a YAMAHA SECA XJ750R and thro it I am sharing my experince.
Once you have located the factory preadjusted carburator you can thn set the others to its specs. I use the feeler gauge to do for my bikes carburators and it works fine.
With regards to the mixture screw..... get the all in tightened but slowly aas to not damage the pin end of it!.
Start the bike and get it to normal running temp and thn set the screws 2 and half turns out...you may need to set your idling speed before you begin this setting of the mixture screws, you prolly will hveto go higher on revs or vicecersa ....onc eyou are at the mixture screws and adjusting them , you will surely note the differenc ein sound of he bike an its idling ..
