Check the battery voltage with a multimeter, it should read approx. 12 volts. with the meter connected to the battery turn the key to on, turn on brights, turn signal and press brake lever. if goes below 9 volts, charge the battery and try again. if still goes below 9 volts replace the battery. when you get a good battery, start the bike and check charging voltage. should be around 14.7 volts at 5k RPM. if you have low charging voltage, let me know.

Jake, if your ignition is electronic, you may not have enough system voltage to run the starter and the ignition at the same time.
Try with a jump from another vehicle. Likely it will start.
Try bringing the battery to a full and complete charge, water up first,
then retest starting. Some units just have to have a perfect battery and state of charge.

Electric starter will not switch off, unsure why

Sounds like you had to disconnect the battery to stop the starter from spinning.
I've had that happen quite a few times and heres what i found and did to fix the problems.

1. I had an old american bike in the shop with a low battery. I didn't know the battery was
low when i hit the start button. The starter solenoid stayed engaged, and the starter kept
turning over the motor, I pulled the battery terminal off to stop the power to starter.

I check battery and it was low, i put full charge on trickle charge and then let it sit
a 1/2 hour before i tested it with the load tester.
It failed big time, dropped all the way to bottom of the scale under a load test

Installed a new battery and fixed the problem. The solenoid, start button, kill switch, key switch all works, it was just a low battery.

2. I had a customer call me because he ran out of gas, when he got gas he turned the bike over for a long time trying to fill the carburetors with gas,
Never hold the start button down for long periods of time. He did and the wires got so hot that the positive wire from the battery to the solenoid melted and stayed engaged.

It was an easy fix, replace the melted solenoid, and only hold the start button in 5 second intervals, allowing it to cool in between starts.
Once the bowls were full again and the bike starts, then it only takes about a second for the bike to start so you normally dont hold the start button for that long.

Hope this helps

I flooded my big red 300 1996 yesterday going through a river to fast,I keeped on the electric start untill it stop turning over the motor, I then waited for a wile and kick started it and it went fine....

You can kick start it but your electric starter won't kick it in ?
Have you check your main fuse to the starter, starter relay and all realted wirings?
You have fried the starter motor my friend when you keep trying to turn it over until the motor stops.
Well, from what you've described, you started motor have gone to brink, better get a new starter.
Cheers

I have trouble starting my scooter, the indicators and brake lights and all that work, but when i try to turn it on using electric start it just makes a humming noise. is this due to my drivebelt being on...

I can't find the a micro phish on but if i where to guess where to start it would be the start clutch or idler gear
Some bike use a sprag clutch it lets it engageone way and free spin the other works great but can get worn out.
Pull your starter out most bikes two bolts and a + wire that comes from your relay. after you have in your hot light hand take a battery and a set of jumper cables clip the groung (-) the body and the positive (+) the to the post. Now clip the ground to the battery and while holding the starter down touch the positive to the battery if you start is working right it should spin fast and want to jump off the table. if so check your starter clutch, or idler gear.

Electric starter on handle bar not working but pull start is ok? i hear its a common problem with the 450grizzly

You will need a meter to figure it out.
With the button pushed, you will get 12 volts (or so) to the big wire at the starter motor.
If not, back up to the starter relay, and to the battery, make sure that it has a good charge.
Keep in mind that some of these have a safety not to start without a brake lever pulled in, which is activated by yet another switch.

If it was the relay, you probably wouldn't hear it clicking. you may be able to hold the starter button, and tap on the starter lightly to see if it works.

Kick starter does not turn over the motor

Hi,
There is a gear mecanism that operates the kick starter.
Atteached to this is a stop lock. This is most likely your nemisis. Chances that the gear has brocken are slim.

Dead battery or bad solenoid?

You could be hearing the solenoid or the relay, but it sounds like you have a loose connection if it is clicking fast.
