3.1l diesel. What is the correct head gasket?


no year? Jeep? one post, and no year.
is this WG jeep say in europe. ? we dont have WG here.
WG started in Europe in 1999.
on this usa forum or in our country no 3.1 VM diesels
i do have your FSM book.
and here is what it states. (different liners used etc)
"CYLINDER HEAD GASKETS
A one piece steel cylinder head gasket is used for
all five cylinder heads.
Cylinder head gaskets are available in three thicknesses.
Identification holes or notches in the right
front corner of the gasket indicate the thickness of
the gasket (Fig. 65).
CAUTION: Piston protrusion must be measured, to
determine cylinder head gasket thickness, if one or
more cylinder wall liners have been replaced.
NOTE: If cylinder wall liners have not been
removed; the same thickness head gasket removed,
may be used.
MEASURING PISTON PROTRUSION
(1) Use special tool VM.1010 with dial indicator
special tool VM.1013 (Fig. 66).
(2) Bring the piston of cylinder no. 1 exactly to top
dead center.
(3) Zero the dial indicator on the cylinder block
mating surface.
(4) Setup the dial indicator on the piston crown
(above the center of the piston pin) 5mm (1/8 in.)
from the edge of the piston and note the measurement
(Fig. 67).
(5) Repeat the procedure with the rest of the cylinders.
(6) Establish the thickness of the steel gasket for
all four cylinder heads on the basis of the greatest
piston protrusion (Fig. 65)

Have 1996 C1500 vortex 4.3 blowed head gaskets ,replaced head gasket but #4 cylinder is misfiring & only has 30psi & 60psi #3 possible burt valve,burnt piston,compression ring damaged or?


the first thing is --did you do anything with the head ( machined flat-checked for cracks)
did you run a thread tap down the stud holes and blow out any oil,water in the holes
did you inspect the valve heads to see for burnt heads
Why did you replace the head gasket to start with
Low pressure between adjacent pistons indicates blown gasket between those cylinders
to do a head job properly, remove the head and check for warps and cracks ( head machined flat) clean out the threads of the studs and blow any thing out of the holes
next check that all the head studs are the same length and insert each stud in the head so that all the studs sit the same distance above the head before tightening down
next tighten down using the correct tightening sequence so that the gasket is evenly compressed
tighten down to the correct tension or degrees of turn as is stated in the specifications
any piston or valve or ring damage would be restricted to the one piston and would not show up in adjacent cylinder

If the battery is in good condition and has the capacity to do the job it should turn over the motor regardless of the compression . Are you sure that the piston is not hitting the head. I doubt if you will get a thick gasket to do the job so 2 gaskets may be the answer. By not hitting the head I mean that you will have a standard head gasket that will overlap into the bore area and the piston is hitting the gasket instead of moving past the lip.

Replace head gasket on homelite hb290v


Need to know your problem. You need a ring compressor to rings compress to put piston in cylinder. The tool you need costs around $10.

Have oil in one of the spark plug cylinders what would be causing this ?


broken/worn piston ring(s). Each piston has 2 rings. These can be replaced by the DIY mechanic by
1) removing head of engine (remove head gasket - you'll replace it), then
2) manually wind the engine (with a ratchet wrench & socket) til the piston in question pops up
3) remove both rings (with ring pliers - available from any auto parts store)
4) install 2 new rings (with a ring installation collar - available at any auto parts store)
--- choose ring installation tool to the correct size for your pistons.
5) re-install head of engine (replacing head gasket)

Note that this procedure preserves the engine timing, so you need not reset it.

List of all components for a top end rebuild. Is there a kit out there?


  1. Piston
  2. piston rings
  3. head gasket
  4. Cylinder base gasket
  5. Fresh bore on cylinder (if it can be bored), see note
  6. Possibly valves, valve guides and valve seals, see note
  7. Miscellaneous seals and gaskets
NOTE; some cylinders are nickle plated and can not be bored unless re-plated. If cylinder is beyond repair then replace it. The valves should be re-seated. If any dishing or valve stretch is present, the bad valves must be replaced. Valve guides seldom need replaced but valve guide seals could be bad. If the bike gives a puff of white smoke when started after sitting for 5 or 10 minutes then replace the seals.

I lost compression in one cylinder an it is the # 2 cylinder


Lost of compression is due to either leaking head gasket, valves not closing and seal properly or piston rings are worn and need replacing. One can tell if you have bad head gasket, oils contaminated by water when looking at dip stick, bad valves cause some smoke and run rough, worn piston rings will cause lots of blow-by and will cause white smoke heavily and also runs rough. Being 1968 original motor and never have been rebuilt will probably have over 100k mile will be needing tear down and rebuilt. Rebuilt it correctly will get another 100k plus. being 1968, doing your head and valves job or replacing head gasket if that is the problems and you can get by it. worn rings, I would rebuilt it completely instead repairing one or two cylinder unless you plan to get rid of it.

Pressure won't build up in tank


Your compressor is the oilless type that incorporates a vinyl/teflon piston ring and a cylinder that is open from the bottom. Remove the cover and push the piston to upmost position. Look for scratches along the upper portion of cylinder. If scratched, compression is leaking thru ring and will not fill tank. Replace with Sears part #k0650 cylinder /piston ring kit to restore full power. While the compressor is apart examing the valve plate and reed valves for wear. If worn replace with part #z-ac-0032. Reed valves tend to crack or loose their shape reducing efficiency. If cylinder and ring are in fair condition, then most likely reed/valve plate is the problem.
