Question about 2000 Yamaha V-Max

2 Answers

Electrical issues I have a 1996 V-Max that died suddenly one day with no warning. Tested and found the fuel pump dead. Replaced the pump but still wouldn't start. Did a check and found the pick-up coil was dead. Is there a bigger problem here? When the bike died it was running great and died like turning off the key. If I replace the coil could there be an issue burning up parts of are is the fuel pump dying the problem? Any help would be greatly apprecialted. Thank You

I did do the "charging system fix" about a year pryor and my battery never went dead after that and never had any other problems. The bike was running great and I have found no indication of shorts or opens. I will try the flow chart though and thanks for the web site info!! L.Baril

You may need to go through your charging system, there is a charging system flow chart posted at vmaxforum.

Cannot fix your problem, but do you by chance still have the dead fuel pump. Not important that the pump works, I just need the plastic barrel held on by five screws on the fuel hose connection end of the pump.

FUEL FILTER,,IF IT IS OLD-REPLACE!
FUEL PUMP NOT REALLY SUSPECT.....BUT POSSIBLE AS IN A THERMAL SHORTING (AFTER A SHORT TIME)
YOU HAVE TO DETERMINE WHETHER THIS DELAYED STALL ISSUE, IS COMING FROM A FUEL OR ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTION. IE: ELECTRIC CUT OUT...SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER...FUEL ISSUES: ROUGH RU..THEN SHUTS DOWNNING, BUCKING & SURGING

No electrical after sudden braking on highway

Probably a broken cable where the insulation has not been broken by the shock load, have a look at the ground terminal area it can look ok but a pull on it to feel any stretch will do it and if not try others in battery area, test main fuse they can look visually ok but may be fractured.

SAME AS EVERYONE ELSE..KEEPS DYING WHILE DOING ANYTHING..REPLACED ALL KINDS OF STUFF INCLUDING A/C COMPRESSOR..RAN FINE AGAIN FOR THREE DAYS THEN TONITE BAM!!!! WHAT COULD IT BE

Hello mlrtyme ....
This sounds like a tricky problem you have.
Maybe if we work together on this we can find a solution.
If it maintains fuel pressure we can pretty much rule out a fuel pump issue. We are looking for an electrical problem.
I have been searching for similar issues to yours and so far have come up with some possible issues.
The slowly dieing is bugging me. Usually electrical is like turning off key. I need to research some more of my sites for a possible solution that may lead us to a solve.

While driving, all warning lights on dash suddenly were lit. When I stopped the car, it wouldn't start again and sounded as though the battery was dead.

Probably the alternator died, then used up all the power in your battery to keep the car running.
Have your alternator tested and maybe replaced. The battery needs tested also.

Hope this helps
