Common Problems on a 01 KTM 520

I just bought a 2001 520 KTM MXC I was wondering what common problems this bike has had, or things that I need to look out for? On this bike. I'm new to the four stroke bike world, some basic do's and don'ts for this bike would be greatly appreciated.

Dont open the throttle fully you will die...
If it stays on the track with now falls, NO problems , It's a KTM

Hi, Tim always check fuel flow first to isolate the problem area otherwise the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel cap or fuel tank not venting properly.
3. Fuel filter clogged with rust or dirt.
4. Fuel valve/petcock not in the on or reserve position.
5. Vacuum line to fuel valve cracked, broken, pinched, or missing*
6. Fuel valve/petcock clogged or diaphragm cracked, cut or torn*
7. Fuel line from the fuel valve to the carburetor or fuel pump clogged, cracked, pinched, bent, broken, or missing.
8. Fuel pump not working*
9. Fuel line touching cylinder or head causing fuel to boil and vapor lock, repair by rerouting and wrapping line with convoluted tubing.
10. Carburetor inlet clogged.
11. Carburetor float or needle and seat stuck.
12. Carburetor not venting properly overflow line or bowl fitting clogged, pinched, or bent.

'02 KTM 520 MXC. Plug wet with oil. Is there a valve problem?

run a compression check to see if it is low. If low squirt some oil in cylinder and rerun. If it stays low possible valve guide problem. If oil fixes compression then the rings are bad.

2001 ktm 300 mxc not getting a spark what would cause not to get a spark

A few things,start simple disconnect the kill switch,remove the spark plug cap from the wire,check all your coneections from the stator to the cdi box to the coil.Still no spark your going to need a multi meter to check the stator and coil.If all this checks out to be good then it is your cdi box.A word of caution test these parts before replacing as they are not returnable and could get costly.A good shop could diagnose your problem in hour time.It may be money well spent if you do not understand your bikes ignition system.

KTM 520EXC Starts with choke but you cannot take off choke

well you hit it right on the head there,, its the jets in the carb blocked up,,strip down carb and clean out all the jets with carb cleaner and compressed air dont go poking any thing into the jets as you will distroy them that way,,, another way of clearing the jets out that you could try first is,,,take off the air filter and start the engine up on choke in needs be,,rev the motor up high and slam your hand over the carb intake,,removing it just before the motor cuts out do this a good fuw times and it some times??? only some times clears the carb jets out for you

The spark plug numbder you need is NGK B9ev .

Starting after servicing

dirty air filter? anything clogging the inside of the air boot?and since u drained AND bled the radiator fluid, did u fill it back up to the top with specific dirt bike radiator fluid?pilot and or needle and main jets clogged and clean your carb. if your pilot jet is clogged you;d be kickin the bike all day. these small things will prevent your bike from starting so check them

which one would be the best?First of all there is no sxc it's sx exc mxc. The difference in the sx and exc is the sx is strickly a mottocross bike. It is not geared or setup suspension wise to ride in the woods. It is much more radical than an exc which is designed specifically for woods riding.,,,

i know you have to change the oil and oil filter but how often and is that the only thing different from maintance on a 2-stroke?. Im getting an 04 kx 250f any help would be great!The two most important aspects of four-stroke maintenance are frequent oil/filter changes and regular valve clearance checks/adjustments. And some four-strokes (RMZ450 for example) have a manual timing chain tensioner that must be regularly checked/adjusted. Everything else is exactly like a two-stroke. ,,,
