Was riding bike and was stopped at a red light when it made a loud noise and died, now it won't start. The engine cranks and turns over but won't start.

You didn't say what year and model the bike was but on any four stroke engine, you must have three things for the engine to run. You need fuel, spark, and compression. The easy one to check is the fuel. Take your air filter off and make sure you're getting fuel to the engine. Then, check your spark. Pull the spark plug wires off the spark plugs in the head and insert another set of plugs in the wires. Ground the plugs against the engine, turn the ignition switch on and press the start button. Watch the plugs to see if you have spark. The next test is compression. With the engine cold, remove the spark plugs. If you have a compression gauge, connect it to one of the heads and spin the engine over with the starter. If you don't have a gauge, simply put your finger over the spark plug hole. Turn the throttle wide open and press the start button. You should show about a hundred pounds of compression if you have a gauge or the compression should blow your finger off the hole with a good deal of force if you're checking it that way. If you have all three of these and they're timed correctly, the engine should run. If the engine won't run, find out which of the three elements is missing and work from there.

Good Luck
Steve

I have a 2005 VTX 1800F. Battery is charged, plenty of fuel, starter turns like crazy but it is not even trying to start. Never has done this before. Checked all of my fuses and they are good.

check the spark plugs and if they are black and sooty and or wet replace them and bike should start. this is common with VTX's when they are started a few times and not ridden they will foul the plugs. let me know what you find and if you need more help. Brian

How many spark plugs are there to change on my 2005 Honda VTX shadow ?

The stock two cylinder 583ccm engine on your VTX uses two spark plugs per cylinder for a total of FOUR. NGK #DPR6E is the stock plug. They should run about $11 a set.

best wishes!

2005 honda crf100f motorcycle will not start

If the spark at the plug is goog then its a fuel or choke / air problem .Check to see if the plugs are wet after turning over the engine a few times .you may have a sticky choke that not letting enough air in with the fuel mixture .

I have a 2005 Honda VTX 1300 that will not start. It motor turns but won't fire. The lights work and are bright. The kill switch is off and there is gas in the tank. What could it be?

Firstly, have you checked for spark?? Is there fuel to the carb?? Is the vacuum line to the fuel valve OK?? If the motor turns, then your kill switch is OK. Check the "basics" first then let us know what your results are and we can move forward

Back firing through rear cylinder

The most likely causes are:
  • Failed spark plug(s). Replace both spark plugs for the misfiring cylinder - or better yet, all four spark plugs.
  • Moisture trapped inside the spark plug caps. Pull the spark plug caps from the spark plugs and spray the inside with WD-40 to remove the highly conductive moisture (WD-40 is non-conductive). Inspect the caps for cracks or carbon tracking (lines of carbon left by electrical arcing, looking like pencil markings). Replace the caps if cracked or carbon tracked.
  • Contaminated fuel. Loosen the carburetor drain screw on the bottom of the carburetor. Catch the fuel in a clean container and inspect for signs of dirt, rust, water, etc.

Why won't my motorcycle start?

One (or more) of the three necessary elements to create combustion is missing: Compression, a spark (at the right time), and fuel.

On a late model motorcycle, like yours, a lack of compression is perhaps the least likely cause. I would first make sure there is spark at the spark plugs - and gasoline in the carburetors.
