Question about 2002 Honda CRF 450 R

1 Answer

Hard starting my 02 crf 450r will start but only when you bump it into gear when you try to kick it won't kick over. so i had a guy look at it and he said that he could push the lever down with his hand and said for sure it needed a new piston kit and the valves seats were about to go. any answers thanks.

i had the guy inspect the valves and he said that the bike has been shimmed so many times that it could not be shimed much more. and the guy also said that the head would last to much longer either. so yeah any recomendations.?

i would do a compression check on it first before tearing into it. maybe also a leakdown test (some of the better compression checkers have this feature) to see if its a valve or pistion ring problem.

if it was a compression issue, then i think it would not start either way (kicking it or bumping it).

if the kick lever goes all the way down with no effort, then i would think the splines are stripped inside the transmission/engine or just stripped where the lever meets the shaft on the outside.

Hi,

You need to inspect the valve clearances. It is common for the intake valves to wear a little.
Inspection of the clearances should take place at 15 hour intervals if you are racing the bike.

When the valves leak, the bike does not maintain compression and kick starting becomes tough. The fact that the bike starts when being bumped, shows a loss of compression.

An easy DIY compression test is to remove the spark plug, place a finger over the plug hole and press down on the kick start lever. The air should be forced past your finger at a high rate and you should hear the air escapeing. You must not be able to prevent any air from escaping.

Good luck

Jon

Engine oil is mixing with coolant

You need to find it, and not run it, as coolant in the oil destroys things fast. Pressure test your coolant system to find a leak. You might be looking at head gasket, or even water pump seal area to start.

2005 Honda TRX 450r is blowing out antifreeze from the overflow.

hi,without seeing the bike i would guess that the head gasket has failed, when this happens the compressed gasses inside the combustion chamber escape into the coolant system and presurize the coolant, the end result being coolant escaping out through the overflow as the pressure increases,i would recommend getting it looked at fairly promptly as the engine will start running poorly and possibly fail...cheers

Sounds like dirt in the main jet of the carb. Take the slide out and clean the needle. The pull the float bowl and blow air or carb cleaner through the brass jet in the middle of the barb, where the needle seats.

02 crf450r starts up fine.... let choke off then

I have a crf 250 R and i have learned multiple things about these bikes like if you leave it running and not riding it for about ten min. it will over heat. they love race gas 113 octane, and alot more. but your prob sounds strange. i know if you hold the hot start while its runing it pops that could be a problem. or it could be you are not cleaning the bike out i would need to know more about this to give a definate answer but try going over the bike. Look at key parts like the
carb
air cleaner
fuel line
any thing that is nesessary for the bike to run.
