You need to get rid of the oxydised top layer - the only way is with specialised plastic polish.

Tip

Re-birthing a Tail Light Lens.

Faded plastic lenses are dangerous and illegal. To re-juvenate faded or sun bleached lenses, a polish can achieve remarkable results, rather than the expense of a new one. Any cream polish or finishing auto paint cutters will work. Use a cotton rag and work in small circles, you will see it shine up beneath your fingers. DO NOT USE anything with an evaporative solvent such as Brasso or silver polish, as the solvent will etch into the plastic and the rag will stick like superglue to the lens. The lens below is from a 20 year old DR650RS parked in the Australian sun.f88686b.jpg

Xr 500 banging when trying to open it up, no power at all. Starts & runs o.k.

Sounds to be an advance knock Have the timing set back a few degrees. You can tell if it is over advanced by it kicking back when starting. Good Luck, Ned
