Question about 1984 Yamaha XJ 650

82 yamaha xj 650 bobber won't start

Just bought this 82 xj 650. it would start as long as you pulled the choke, but you only had 2 tries after that you had to push start. if you don't pull the choke it does nothing it won't even try to turn over. now it won't start at all even with a push start. what is wrong?"

let me explain a little better, lets say one morning i walk out to my bike sit down, stick the key in, switch it to on, pull the choke, hit the start button, she starts let it warm up everything is fine and i'm off. the next day i go out do everything the same, the bike starts it dies for whatever reason, pull the choke, hit start, and i get nothing, i mean nothing at the most a click, now i have 2 options push start or wait like 20 min try to start with the ignition, keep my hand on the throttle to make she it doesn't die, and again im off. you see if i forget to pull the choke i get nothing, if i forget to pull it get nothing, try to start it again pulling the choke still nothing, i have to pull it the first time. now it won't start at all, pull the choke, push start, scream, cuss, cry, doesn't matter anymore i still get the same thing. nothing.

Berrymans B12 will help cleaning out the gum in the carbs, just add some in the tank, get the damn thing to run and let it do its stuff.

i wonder if the battery is near the end of its life. meaning, if it fires off immediately, then charging circuit will recharge it as you ride. but, if it doesn't start immediately, you don't get a 2nd chance until the battery can recover on its own.

try this: try and start it without using the choke so that it will not start the 2nd try. immediately jump the bike (jumper cables or battery box) but keep the choke out. i want to see if the additional battery in the loop will run the starter motor.

how long was it sitting before you bought the bike? if for a bit, then i would focus on removing and cleaning the carb assuming it starts on starting fluid. if it starts with starting fluid (or ether), then it proves spark and compression are fine. the carbs probably have blocked jets and some varnish & gum in there from the gas breaking down over time. a very common problem with engines that sit for a bit with fuel in the carb.

Starting?

pull the choke out fully, start the engine, push choke into halfway if it will still run, let it warm for a min or 2. ride it, it may need choke still for about a mile. but thats trial and error, try pushing it in, you will find out right away if the bike still wants it.
i have an owners manual on this bike if you need a copy e-mail me vision-tech@comcast.net
