Its probable simple it very often is with Harley's I think you may have an engine exhause that may have an air leek, even though you hear no sound from the exhaust that may give you clue, just make sure all carbs/injectors, air box and exhaust's are on tightly go can be as carfull as you like it happens to the best of us even me after 42yrs of bikeing I hope this solves you problem its due to old idears on bikes *** bikes have different methods but its impossble work on them at leat you can repair a Harly, Good luch chum some time you need an artificial sealer dont ask me what.
Regards, Chas

2000 sportster front cylinder backfires

There is probably a small leak in the intake tube to that cylinder. Remove and carefully inspect and reinstall carb and induction manifold.

Backfiring at low rpm through carborator Do you have a dvd or book on this & which is better?

This is quite common these days. The reason it's doing this is because of one or two things. The first thing to check is the accelerator pump. Take the air filter cover and the air filter element off the carb. Leave the air filter backing plate on the engine. With the engine OFF, turn the throttle wide open rather rapidly while looking into the carb. You'll see a brass nozzle standing up just inside the mouth of the carb. When you crank the throttle wide open, there should be a stream of fuel squirted from this nozzle into the carb. If not, the diaphragm in the carburetor's accelerator pump is bad. The other thing is that the bike is jetted extremely lean from the factory so that it meets EPA emission standards. As a result of the lean jetting, the engine will cough back through the carb from time to time. You need to go up one step on the carburetor's slow speed jet and adjust the idle mixture. Either replacing the accelerator pump diaphragm or the rejetting job requires taking the carb off the engine. If you are not comfortable doing this, take it to a professional mechanic. I don't know of any DVD's on how to disassemble and reassemble a Keihin CV carb but you can get a service manual from http://www.diyrepairmanuals.com/products.asp?cat=14287

Good Luck
Steve

My harley 2004 sportster XL883 is starting, but it is backfiring alot and when i try to ride it has no power.

Is it backfiring through carb or exhaust? Has it been sitting for any period of time? We suspect carb issues. Try cleaning carb, pay special attention to the pilot jet and main jet circuits. Clean with spray carb cleaner and air, do not use wire. Make sure needle and seat are clean.

How do i know if i have a cv carb motor.

By the year, which in this case is 2000. The factory stopped using the butterfly type on Sportsters somewhere around 1988 I think. But they are defitnely not on the 2000 unless someone has put it on. There also should be sticker on the side of the carby telling you it is a CV and what year. If all that fails take the air cleaner off and have a look down the carby, there should be a slide inside which you can lift upwards. This works of a vaccumn when the engine is running hence the constant velocity "CV"
