2003 suzuki savage ls650 starter won't turn- doesn't start

My savage was sitting for a couple months and when I went to ride it wouldn't start. I bought a new battery but when i push the starter nothing happens, no noise, nothing. All my lights come on but I don't get a crank or anything. Just no noise whatsoever.

The battery is fully charged and tested. When i went to test the solinoid and put the tester against it, it started to work, like it wanted to start. the bike didn't start, just the soliniod, i guess it started to spin. i took apart the starter button and tried to test for voltage but got nothing. shouldn't i be getting voltage at the button, and would this indicate a short in the line?

was the battery top charged before you installed it? most motorcycle batteries do not come charged and need to be trickle charged before using them.

using a voltmeter, what is the battery reading in volts?

with the voltmeter still connected, what does it read in volts when you try to start it?

Dump the fuel, go with a new spark plug, hightest gas and clean the carb. it will start rite up. if not its not just from sitting. but this should work. Bob,

Try the connections on the starter and the solenoid they could have corrosion which will affect the starter.if they are corroded just clean them up with a wire brush.

The new engine is NOT going to slide right in. You would need to cut the frame tubes, add tube sections and then cut off and move engine mount tabs on the frame. Another problem will be the alignment of the front sprocket to the rear sprocket. A wider engine than the old one will stick out on the right side. This would affect the balance of the bike and cause a squirrelly ride. Please rate my answer. Thanks.

Hi, Isaac and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, needs to be 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
4. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
5. Tip over sensor needs a reset.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
9. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
10. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
11. Check for engine trouble codes.
