Boyer electronic ignition

I have a Boyer electronic ignition on my bike and am experiencing misfiring. Has anyone else had similar problems with this unit?

    i have fitted boyer electronic ignition bike starts well runs well but when i use front or rear brake the engine stops its like hitting the engine kill switch

Triumph T120 1968 spark problems

Hi, I would suspect that the dual coil is the problem, normally on the Bonnie you have a spark every other stroke. Because the engine is a parallel twin (both pistons go up and down at the same time) you are firing both plugs every time the pistons are on the ignition stroke. This is why you get a shock the HT has to go somewhere and you are releasing this to the frame when you take out a plug. Dual output coils are really designed for 4 cylinder bikes where the second spark can be lost during the firing cycle. Most old Honda's CB400/500/550/750 used the dual coil ignition system. You need to have a coil for each plug as you had before. Hope this helps

85 GS550 and the spark module or the spark igniter is bad. swapped the coils from right to left to verify the coils are both good, and they are. The pick up coils also swapped and they are good. I only get...

hi mate ,,i've got the same problem.<br /> i bought a basket case 550ef with no igniter unit(cdi) fitted,,turns out they're near impossible to find used,or stupidly priced...if i were you i'd go down the boyer bransden route because you don't have to buy the coils or pick ups you can get the igniter module seperately.hope this helps.........john..

The locations of both sets of points in a 1976

It has been a while... but I believe there is a round access cover about 2" in diameter on the right hand side of the bike, forward part of the engine.

That corresponds with the end of the exhaust camshaft. 9_11_2014_6_00_28_pm.jpg
In this photo, it is chrome plated. They are held on by two philips head machine screws.

The points themselves are mounted on two plates. The first plate adjusts both sets of points, the second adjusts the difference in the two sparks.


That said, you might be on a wild goose chase. Most of the older T120s and T140s have already been converted to Boyer electronic ignition systems. MUCH more reliable, and much less maintenance. Smoother, and more precise as well.

Boyer conversion or not, the access plate in in the same place. It just might be a "pointless" ignition.

Point location

The points cover should be on the right hand side of the engine, at the end of the exhaust cam shaft.

It is possible that the original plate was replaced by an aftermarket version with cooling fins. That doesn't do much, but it *looks* cooler to some eyes.

Most of these bikes have been refitted with Boyer ignition kits, so under the plate the points are no longer there. They are likely replaced with a sensor and magnetic sensor. That is a MUCH more reliable and maintenance free system.

If you do still have points, there will be two contact sets. The entire disk shaped plate will rotate to adjust timing and a smaller partial plate containing the second set of points can also be adjusted. That gives you control over timing, and difference between cylinders.

Really, I was a stickler for "original" on my bike, and I regret not changing to an electronic Boyer system as soon as they became available. Go for the upgrade. It's well worth it. A good shop can have it done in an afternoon, and you will never have to think twice about ignition or timing again.
