I'm sure it makes a big differences whether it's on the stand or not.  I JUST bought mine.  On the stand it's a quart low, upright it's overfull...?  I'm going with on the stand to be on the safe side.

The bike needs to be standing up straight. if you check the oil w/ the bike on the stand it will show that the oil is low and you will tend to over fill. it is better to be a little low verses overfull. If the bike is overfilled it could damage the seals, rings or valves.

Bike should be level and check with dip stick all the way in.

Bullethead69, Somehow I don't think that it matters a whole lot. If it were a real critical measurement, it would have been printed in RED ink in the owners manual that the machine should be perfectly verticle with relation to a known flat piece of terra firma. If the dipstick says it's full... then it's full... louie12fix on fixya

Do u check trany on side stand r upright on 2001 dyna wide glide

Check the oil level in the transmission with the bike standing as straight up as safely possible. Don't let it fall over. The oil level should be between the two marks on the dipstick. Your transmission holds 20-24 ounces of oil. Check the engine oil with the bike on the sidestand and keep the oil level between the two marks on the stick. Avoid "topping off" the oil tank. As long as the level is between the two lines, it's fine.

You can change the rear shocks, look for a lowering kit for a HD for a good shock manf. Many good shock lowering kits out there.

Do I check the oil in my intruder 1400 resting on the kickstand?

Yes you do check the oil level when the bike is straight up and down to the ground. start the bike let it run for 3- 5 min shut it off. let it stand for 3-5 min get the bike is straight up and down. then check the motor oil level.
