My 2001 Yamaha YZ 250F won't idle without choke. Bogs out with choke off. Idles just fine with choke on. What could be the problem and could i fix it in my garage?

I can give it throttle when choke is on. and it idles just fine with the choke. i left it running for a little bit and took the choke off and it bogs out even when i give it gas. i don't know what the last thing i just bought it. i figured it has been sitting for awhile. when i emptied the carburetor that was some gas that wasn't drained. the guy i bought it from said it only sat for about a month. i think is was longer. but why does won't it idle with choke off and idles fine with choke?

My 2003 yz250f will not idle with choke off. Took apart and cleaned the bottom half of carb. Set pilot screw back to Fac. settings of 2 1/8 turns out. Still having same problem. I'm gonna turn pilot screw in and see if it makes a difference. Any other ideas , please let me know.

does it idle high with the choke on? are you able to adjust the throttle idle with the adjustment screw? if it idles high and will not respond to change in idle screw setting, i would try this if you are comfortable working on the bike.

    1. unscrew & remove the throttle cable from where it enters the top of the carb.

    2. pull it out and carb slide should be attached to it.

    3. look at the slide. one side should have a vertical cut in it from top to bottom and the other side should have a notch in it at the bottom.

    4. reinsert the slide with the notch facing the same side as the idle adjustment screw so when it is put back into the carb neck, this notch will rest on the screw. screw will keep slide partially open allowing it to idle.

    5. restart the bike w/ choke on and slowly open the choke while adjusting idle to get it dialed in. screw it in to increase idle and out to decrease idle.

let me know if this worked. if it didn't, then we will move onto the carb insides specifically the carb float.

You will have to clean the carburator there seems to be dirt in it thus obstructing the free flow of gas through the jets.

Hope you have some idea about carburators.

Please visit this site search for carburator ..you will get the basic idea to it.
There you will also find 'Other motocycles" click in there and you maight gt a solution to your bike.

Did you pull the float pin out and the brass housing that the pin goes in? you may have to clean that and go get some spray brake cleaner with the red straw and blow out all the ports. the reason it will idle with the choke pulled is it shuts off air flow which pulls more fuel to air. without the choke it cant get enough fuel. i would try the bowl again starting with the float and needle. but go ahead and just really clean it all the way through or you will just keep chasing it.

Have you cleaned the carburator ? It seems the main jet has some kind of obstruction.
