First and formost make sure air filter is clean. Then start bike and warm up engine.with engine warm adjust idle screw(the big screw with spring around it)Turn clockwise to increase and counterclock wise to decrease.with bike idling properly the low speed air adjustment screw (small screw located just above fuel bowl on side of carb)Adjust in small increments 1/16 turns at a time till bike has smooth throttle responce. This screw contols air flow during idle and up to 1/4 throttle. From 1/4 throttle and up the needle setting on plunger inside of carb takes care of 1/4 and up.You usally dont have to mess with needle unless you do upgrades to get more power out of bike. But over time the low speed settings can change due to wear on idle needle and air needle. So thats why you have to make adjustments. If bike still dosent respond or idle correctly I would purchase carb rebuild kit and your problem will be solved.
Hi allenplum, There are 2 mixture screws, 1) the idle speed screw, 2) is the idle speed mixture screw. The idle speed screw is located on the carburetor, nar the throttle arm where your throttle cable is connected. There is a screw that you will find there that you screw in or out to speed up, or slow down the engine idle. The idle speed mixture screw is located lower down on carb and has a spring on it. There should be 2 screws side by side, one is the idle speed and the other is the high speed mixture screw. They are marked on the carb body, with the letter H or L . To adjust, remember the screw position before you do any adjustments. Start by turning the screw in (clockwise) all the way in until lightly seated, so no damage is done to the seat or needle. Turn out (counterclockwise) 11/4 inch, this should be OK to start the engine. Along with the idle speed screw, you should be able to get the correct idle required. With all the modernization happening, there might not be a high or low adjust as they are ported inside the carb. You might get just the high or just the low adjust needles. I hope this is helpful to you. All the best and good luck. Denis.
try cleaning the throttle body.that will definatly affect your idle. if it still does it look on throttle body for an air bypass screw i dont know if a 04 has one but all the older ones did.it will be a screw head that is recessed in a holeit may have a rubber plug on top of it. anyway if it does give it a couple turns out and see if idle goes up then adjust to whatever it says on the emmision label.
DONT mess with the scew that adjusts the throttle stop once out of adjustment you wont be able to put it back
Your carb is situated under your petrol tank, It is possible to take it off buy taking your tank off (just make sure you turn the petrol tap off first) then unbolting the air intake plastic thing (big black thing under your tank) sorry dont know what its called, then you will have your carb, just make sure you take pics of where the tubes and wires go before taking it off. Hope this helps
have you tried setting the idle scerw on carb? if not that try the oil/air mixture screw on carb, i had a tzr that had same prob and it was down to setting up them 23 little screws
