No previous problems with selecting gears. No unusal noise. After stopping at a road junction and starting off in 1st gear; change into 2nd gear normal; attempting to change into 3rd the gear lever went loose. I suspect some fault with the gearstick pivot mechanism or the control rod attached to it. I would appreciate any ideas before starting to dismantle anything and to help decide to do it myself or get professional help.

Your link broke off. What might have happened is the car got stuck in 1st, and when you shifted to second, the link broke. Not too clued up on your car, but you probably need to drop the gearbox. On some cars you can take out the shifter without having to drop the box and still see if the link is broken. Good luck

Car is in limp in mode unless you have the tools to work on automatic transmission you will need to take it to a transmission shop. Of course you can check oil level but I suspect you have other issues.

It seems like your "2nd start" button is turned on. The 80 series LC has a button next to the shifter which allows it to start in 2nd gear. If the button is not engaged then there could be a problem with the circuit, but that is not common
