Question about 1982 Honda GL 1100 Aspencade Gold Wing

Starting Issue for my 1982 Honda GL1100 Aspencade

I went out to start it and when I pressed the ignition button, The engine did not start, but I heard a click and the power went out until I released the iginition button. Tired again, and everytime the same thing. Sounds like the clicking is coming from the start relay? The battery is fully charged. Am I on the right trail here? Any suggestions to make sure it is the starter relay?

Battery is a couple of years old. I went out and jumped it with my car. Voila - it kicked over. Good news is that it is the battery, bad news is i have to buy one. lol. Thanks for the help.

went to start my 1982 gl 1100 this spring, motor turned over fine, but wouldn't start. i think i may have flooded it. waited awhile, and tried again. all i hear is a clicking sound, and motor will not turn over.

my interstates starter relay just clicks..

Anyone know how to check it?

battery might be fully charged, but it is past its useful life as under load, it doesn't have enough amps to turn the starter motor. how old is this battery?

try jumping the bike with an automobile battery or portable battery box and see if it fires. if it does, then replace the battery. if it doesn't, then report back and see what we can try next.

Glad to hear it was only the battery.

when you buy one (either from a store or online), be sure to trickle charge it completely BEFORE using it on the bike. gotta start with a fully charged battery or it will never perform properly in the future.

online stores will sell you "dry" batteries so you'll have to buy some acid at your local auto parts store. if you get it from a store, it should come "wet". both will need a charge first.

2 years is about right for a lead-acid battery especially the lower end units. if you go with a yuasa brand, expect additional 1 to 2 years.

glad i could help. enjoy that classic!

My honda ran well until I hooked tail lights up and now I have neutral light and oil light no other lights work also it don't fire when I crank it lights come on as long as its cranking

Hi, Steve and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enricher.
5. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
6. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
7. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
8. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and module.
9. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
10. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty ignition coil, ignition module or sensors (MAP, CMP, CKP, O2 and/or BAS).
11. Faulty fuel pump fuse or relay.
11. Security alarm needs a reset.

Ive got a gl1100 1982 with air front suspension q-what is the best way to change the front fork to a convensional spring fork and what forks would be the best ?

Hello and thanks for the question,
Your 1982 GL1100 has air assist type of suspension. It has springs in the front as well as the air pressure. This is a heavy bike and the front forks are marginal at best. I have had great results from installing progressive suspension springs and moving up to a heavier fork oil (20wt ) to keep the bike from diving so far during braking.

www.progressivesuspension.com

You should look at having the forks rebuilt with these parts and you will find that the bike handles much better than before.
The springs that are in the bike are old now and should be updated with new style parts.

Thanks and I hope that this helps.
Steve

1983 gl1100 aspencade. It has digital speedometer

The speedometer, trip odometer and odometer are all driven by the speed sensor at the front wheel (NO CABLES).

Try the simple (but time consuming) test indicated in the attached image.

I rebuilt the carbs on my GL1100 aspencade but am still getting engine loading when going uphill at 65mph in 5th gear. Can anyone give me some advice on what to fix or check next.

I had same problem, clutch is oil bath type, check oil level in engine, if not full the first thing to happen is loss of power in 5th gear going up hill. Full level, loss of power GONE!!! Lynn Ed.
