Wire that is between your power source and the pump, needs to be broken/spliced in, with a switch.

If this is a 240 wired motor/pump then Both "hot" wires need to be broken by the switch. If 120, then it is possible to just break the one hot wire. That will be the (Normally) black wire. But be very careful in this as Electricity is "Color Blind"! It does not care what the wire color is. Checking with a meter is always wise & when working with electricity wires, ensure power breaker shut off switches are in the "Off" position.

I posted the two different types of switches you can get at a hardware store.

I need to get a toggle switch for my proline PE 71 pool pump. Finding it difficult to find which is the right one!

go online and search for single pole single throw toggle switch.
Since the motor does not have a switch from factory you must furnish power cord. See if a wall light switch will fit your box.
Look om switch for model number and search that model number

Jiffy toggle switch

yes, cut the wire about 18" - 24" from the plug end, then install a regular wall light switch in an outdoor style weather proof single toggle switch gang box. Available all day at your local DIY Center.

I have done this with portable pumps that I take with me on the job site at times. I do something a little different by taking one extra step for safety reasons. I use a "Double" gang box instead of a Single and install a GFCI outlet next to the switch where the GFCI is wired first and the switch is wired in after the GFCI so it is protected from any possible shock. and the pump will be protected as well.

Good Luck

A Century pool spa motor part # 7/177803/02. I have a black, white, red wires. Can someone please tell me how to hook it up to the motor. than you very much

Is this a two speed motor?
motor for a spa pump?
or, are you trying to hook up a capacitor to the motor?
your question is very vague!
if you have a pump connection cord, with the colors you mentioned, did you purposely leave out the fact that there is a Green wire as well?
please be more specific as to the assistance you are seeking.
but if we're intending us to play a guessing game... then if had those colors PLUS a green wire, that would be power supply wires for a TWO speed pump motor, commonly found on SPA pumps.
  • Green will always be Ground.
  • White is your Common Hot LINE WIRE #1
  • Black will be a SWITCHING/TOGGLE Hot LINE WIRE #2
    • Most Commonly a HIGH Speed
  • Red will be a SWITCHING/TOGGLE Hot LINE WIRE #2
    • Most Commonly a LOW SPEED
There will be a decal on the side of the motor telling you which post will be what. If not, the wire up posts will have a letter designations right next to them...
C for Common
H for High
L for Low
green wire will go right onto motor

Pump starts switching between high and low by itself for 45 seconds, then shuts off.

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

Is this a two speed pool pump with a toggle switch as part of the motor or a spa pump plugged into a control that uses relays to switch from high to low?

If it is a pool pump you will need a new toggle switch.

If it is a spa unit, replace the relay.

I just replaced my pool pump motor and it runs fine now but will not shut off. I did not mark the wires when I removed them as I didn't think it mattered except for the ground. When I reconnected the new...

Did the old motor have a built in toggle switch and the new one doesn't? The motor itself will not have an on/off switch...is the one there shorted closed? If the new one has a switch it sounds like you may have crossed the line and load leads so the motor always has power...Please comment back with more details.
