Question about 2008 BMW G 650 Xchallenge

1 Answer

Xchallenge won't start when engine is hot.

Always starts first time when the engine is cold. When the engine is hot (e.g. filling up with petrol or a short stop) it splutters & backfires and has trouble starting. If you are lucky it will eventually fire up after 6 -10 attempts. Any more and the battery is too flat to turn the engine over (I’ve had several long pushes home). The bike is 6 months old and has 2600 miles on the clock. It has always exhibited this characteristic but it is getting worse.

Check tightness of bolt where (carb/FI) goes into intake, and where intake goes into engine. Check gaskets in those locations, if any. Sounds like heat is causing some material to distort, causing a vacuum leak.

2008 BMW G650 X Moto Ignition problems, I recently brought this bike last week and from a motorcycle company they have a reciept with it doing a full on service from spark plug to brake pads, i have...

Hi, Shaun and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Bank angle sensor tripped and ignition/light key switch not cycled to the "OFF" position and then back to the "ON" position.
5. Security alarm needs a reset.
6. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Electric starter shaft pinion gear is not engaging or over-running starter clutch slipping.

Gas tank ditech

If you have put diesel in, disconnect supply pipe to injector and allow to drain, flush through with fresh petrol. Reconnect pipe and crank engine over, will take some time but should start, if it doesn't you may have to replace the spark plug, as the diesel will have gummed it up. Will smoke a bit when it starts but will clear. If you have just filled up with the wrong grade of petrol, just fill up with correct grade and run it through, shouldn't be a problem

Want to change oilneed toknow where the plugs are and how much oil

Underneath the transmission there are two drain plugs. The center one is the transmission drain. The drain plug near the front left is the engine oil drain. I always add three quarts with the filter change, start the engine and run a few minutes and then check the oil with the dipstick. There are two marks on the stick. One is "Full Cold" and one is "Full Hot". Fill to the full cold mark, do not overfill.

Good luck

How many quarts of oil is needed for an oil and filter change?

I always put in three quarts initially. Then start the engine and run it for about three or four minutes checking for leaks and to fill the oil filter. Then check the oil with the bike on the side stand and top it off. The dip stick has two marks on it. One is "FULL COLD" the other is "FULL HOT". Since the engine has only run a few minutes fill to 'FULL COLD' mark, do not overfill.

Cold blooded starting

Hi .......... Cold mornings tend to be demanding on batteries, esp'ly if they're not a 100%. How many times does it turn over ?
I always recommend (if possible) switching off petrol just prior to stopping the engine, this ensures only a float bowl of petrol is available AND when you go to start it the amount of fuel (mixture) is limited ......... so in theory the chance of 'flooding' it is reduced. How old are the plugs ?
Give it a go and see how you get on.
