First unplug the connector for the startor. then check for power AC on all 3 wires, it has to be the same at 4000 or 5000 rpm. some 50 or 60 volts AC. if this is ok then plug it back and check the power DC in the batt. if it is 12.70 dc volts or under when the revs go high then it is the regulator.

Honda foreman 2000 450 won't start but fires sometimes with electric start when letting off button but does nothing with the pull start. I have replaced the starter switch, went over the wire harness.


Hi, Christina and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enricher.
5. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
6. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
7. Severely discharged or damaged battery, you need 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
8. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
9. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and module.
10.. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
11. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty ignition coil, ignition module or sensors (MAP, CMP, CKP, O2, TPS, ETP, IAC,or BAS).
12. Faulty neutral, clutch lever, or kickstand safety switch.
13. Faulty fuel pump fuse or relay.
14. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
15. Security system not disarming alarm needs a reset.

1998 honda 450 foreman isn't running right. I put new carburetor on it and spark plug and still runs bad. Like vapor locking or running out of gas. Any ideas? Thanks


Hi David, the following applies to carbureted also fuel injected models and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or damaged battery, 9 volts or lower.
2. Faulty alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Faulty main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Faulty system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Faulty ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
7. Faulty CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.
9. . Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
10. Fuel tank empty.
11. Gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.
12. A faulty fuel pump, pressure regulator and or fuel injectors.
13. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.
14. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.

Hi there is a wrench symbol displaying on the gauge cluster on my honda foreman 2014 atv what does it mean


That is equivalent to a "Check Engine" light, meaning that a condition exists which requires attention. Check all fluid levels, and readout codes from the ECU as a starting point for diagnosis.

Not charging battery


what we need to do is find out if your stator isnt working or if your regulator is bad
you need a volt meter on the ac scale and check across the battery with the engine off and with the engine running and with it running and with the lights on
let me know what you have for readings
