Speedometer Cable 2001 HD Softail Standard

Recently I was going along at 60 mph and watched as the needle went
down to 0 mph. How would I go about replacing the Cable myself, and
at what end do I start looking first? Does it go to the front tire or the rear tire or somewhere else (tranny?). Need your help. Greatly

2005 heritage speedometer working eratic. just got it out of storage and took for a ride down driveway speedometer kept climbing and pegged. turn off switch back and forth to acc. and speedometer resets...

Hi Anonymous, always check your instrument fuse before performing the next procedure, try cleaning your speed sensor located on top of the transmissions right side between the top cover and the chrome starter end cap on Twin Cams and on top of the engine case between the rear cylinder and the starter motor for Sportsters. Remove the the bolt that secures the sensor and pull it out of the transmission. Inspect sensor for obvious damage and repace if necessary. If sensor has no damage then wipe clean any obvious contamination like micro fiberous material with a clean rag and reinstall, torque bolt to 8 ft lbs. I have a 2000 3,000 rpm my speedometer reads 40 mph.any ideas whats wrong,or what can i do?

Hello Galen... The digital speedo on your Harley goes thru a very short start up sequence. If you crank the bike before this sequence is complete, it will often make the speedo register incorrectly. Next time you turn on the ignition, watch the speedo needle, it will make a little ****, once this is done crank the bike. If it reads wrong going down the road, pull over, turn off ignition and crank it again while waiting for the needle.

You can also remove & clean the speedo sensor of debris (on top of the transmission). Sometimes the sensor will pick up small metal particles & cause the speedo to be off.

I hope this helps & good luck with your bike.

Having a problem with the speedometer on 2001 SV650

You need to replace the speedometer cable. The years of turning inside the protective cable have worn it out. Disconnect both ends and the piece(s) supporting the cable and replace it. Simple and relatively quick too. Happy Riding.

Check the clutch lever free play. It should have about 3/4 inch of movement before any resistance is felt. The speedometer problem may be a bad inner flexible shaft within the speedometer cable. Unscrew the meter end of the cable and pull out the flex shaft--it may be frayed (replace) or just need lubrication.
