Sportster Wheel Spacer positioning

I have a 96 XL883 that needed tires. I've usually done all my own work with my trusty Clymer manual without a problem and, I'm just short of anal when it comes to placing items in reverse order of they way they go back together. This time, while removing the front cast wheel axle, the spacers dropped. And murphy's law dictated they drop and roll before I could see the positioning. Anyone have a clue? There's 3 and I know 2 came from the rotor side. They're 5/16, 9/16 and 7/8. The Clymer book is not real clear on this one. Thanks for any help out there.

Install wheel without spacers. axle has hole in it to align right side leg. center wheel and check spacing order. right side of wheel ussually has one spacer as axle is a part of its spacing.

If you measure the distance between the fork slide adjustments, you should be able to take your rear axle/spindle and place the spacers on it while sizing it up to the width of the slide grooves and move them till there is an equal space on both sides. Do this, of course, without the wheel/sproket assembly. Thank you, Dana.

2008 Sportster 883 Will not start. I have spark to both cylinders, fuel pump pressures up.

Hi Brian, when checking for spark the CKP needs to measure the compression bump in order to send the correct signal to the ICM/ECM so always check for spark with either a third plug grounded or lift the end of the plug boot 1/2 " off one of spark plugs that are in the head. and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty
2. Fuel supply valve turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded with gasoline as a result of over use of enrichner.
5. Fuel valve or filter clogged.
6. Vacuum hose to automatic fuel supply valve disconnected, leaking, or pinched.
7. Discharged battery, loose or broken battery connections especially the negative cable at "BOTH" ends
8. Loose wire connection at coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and module.
9. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting, spark plug cable connections loose,
or cables connected to wrong cylinders.
10. Ignition timing incorrect due to faulty ignition coil, ignition module, or sensors " Manifold Absolute Pressure" "Camshaft Position Sensor" "Crank Position Sensor" "Brake Apply Sensor
11. Engine lubricant to heavy ( winter operation )
12. Sticking or damaged valves or push rod wrong length.
13. Primary cam sproket spline sheared or missing spacer.
14. Security alarm system not disarming.

I would like to ontain or find out correct positioning for spacer on rear axle for 1989 883 sportster

Go to this site http://www.bikebandit.com Choose OEM parts and locate your bike and go to wheels and brakes. The brake caliper bracket acts as the spacer on one side and the axle spacer goes on the other side. There may be two small "spacers" that are actually inner races for the wheel bearing seals to ride on in both sides of the wheel.

Good Luck
Steve

What are the largest tires (width) that I can put on my 03 FXST (both rear and front) without doing any modifications. Thanks!

Hi.

Standard tires are already oversized in 03 model. This are the maximum standard allowed, probably the same as what you already have:
Front - D402F MH90-21 54H
Rear - D401 150/80B16 71H
(front: 80/90 - rear :150/80-it was 130 in 02 model)

Without modification you cannot use any bigger tire. By changing wheel, belt and pulley, you can mount at rear up to 200 at rear (see job done on the 06 softail here).

At front you need to replace wheel and to move the fender. The result is not always great when you do modification to front wheel. The best thing to do is buying a spacer kit.

Regards

Ginko.

If you have no idea where the spacers went ,then try them on any way ,You will know if they are in the right position as the disc break will only line up one way .and when you spin the wheel it should run fairly free .If it binds then its not right .

96 xl883 speedo problem

Several possibilities. Your speed sensor may have picked up some metal from the trans. Remove it and wipe off the chips. Bad speedometer or intermittent bad connection or broken wire to the speedo.
