Question about 1999 Honda XR 250 R

1 Answer

Oil leak I am considering buying a 99 xr 250 a friend has had for some time. I know that it has really been ridden alot. It has an oil leak that looks to be coming out between the upper head and the cylinder. His 11 year old son remarked that it is hard to crank. My dad feels like the oil leak could be a sign of low compression possibly making it hard to crank. They all tell me that the old bike runs well after you get it started. Can you give me some advice please?

With a ten year old 250 cc engine that has been ridden a lot you should be prepared to rebuild the motor. If you have to have someone else do it the bike is probably not worth the cost. If you can do it yourself the parts can be bought for less than $400 and installed in a day.

A friend is selling a 2003 XR50 but it won't start. He thinks someone mixed 2 stroke oil with the gas. it has been sitting for a few years

It will need more work than just kicking. If the price is way under book and you feel like learning about the bike, buy it. Be sure this is a "friend".

What type of oil do I use for a 1993 Honda XR 250? How much oil do I put in it?

I use semi-synthetic 20W50 and change the oil every 3500-4000 km.
I do the filter at the same time.

Have a 08 250sxf and it uses oil when ridden. i dont know where the leak is cos it only happens when ridden and i end up with oil all over the chain rear tyre and engine. i noticed once oil coming out of...

Assuming that the bike is otherwise running good and has no compression issues, it sounds like you mak have a clogged crankcase vent. If this hose gets pinched or clogged with mud, the crankcase will build up pressure and start forcing oil out whatever spot it can. If this isn't the issue, you will need to get a compression or leak down test.

97 XR 250. AFTER RUNNING FOR A LITTLE TIME THE CRANKCASE OVERFLOW STARTS FLOWING(OIL). IF IT WERE RINGS WOULDNT IT START LEAKING IN THE BEGINING AS WELL.

No, because it may take some time for the oil to heat up and expand. Then, once this happens, the oil can begin to get whipped up by coming in contact with moving engine and transmission parts. Oil foaming can occur and over-run the crankcase ventilation system.

To help eliminate this problem, be sure to use the correct oil as recommended in the Honda owner's manual. Do not overfill the crankcase with oil. Change the oil and filter more frequently - especially after riding through deep water crossings.

If you suspect worn piston rings, check the spark plug for oil contamination and perform a cylinder compression and leak-down check.

What would cause too much oil in the crank case

you put too much oil in it
or the float in the carb is stuck open and it is really gas leaking by the piston rings and mixing with the oil in the crank case
smell the oil if it is gas in there dont try to start it until the carb is repaired and the oil changed
this could turn into a big problem if it ignites in the crank case
good luck
