I would need to feel this to diagnose it. Most likely you have lost the engine idle speed learned information and this means you must drive it for a week or so for the idle to relearn your habits.
Possibly the vent line that routs fuel vapors from the gas tank to the charcoal canister has come loose. Check the hoses and lines around the fuel tank for leaks. There will be a fuel feed line to engine, a fuel return line from engine, and the evap. line or hose that carries the fuel vapors.
Good thing you passed before the engine light came on. You should mos def get the code from that engine light. If you smell gas you have a leak in the system. Same thing happened to me i had to drop the tank and change the seal around the lid of the fuel pump housing because the smell was coming from under the car and in the car. I also followed my fuel lines and saw some cracks forming so i replaced those and the gas cap for the heck of it. Only $20 for everything but make sure to pull the code first. It reslly makes things easier.
sometimes if a fuel pressure regulator goes bad , you will be able to smell fuel fumes under hood. a leaking pressure regulator will cause---hard starting, poor fuel economy, stalling, check engine light, gas smell under hood. also check all fuel lines under hood.
Start by making sure you have spark to the spark plugs. If not you may have a problem with the plug wires or coil. It's also possible you're not getting gas to the engine possibly from a faulty fuel pump.
If you change the fuel pump be sure to replace the fuel filter also.
