I have a '97 gmc k2500. 5.7l. Has a 4L80 which I bought a year ago. Now truck runs at higher rpm 2050 at 100km/h as opposed to 1950 it should be and 2400 rpm at 110 km/h should be 2100 ish if I remember. It's been a while. The cruise does not engage. It feels like the transmission is not engaged properly because I get the extra horses of higher engine speed too. The truck has failed to shift into 4th on the highway and sometimes runs at 2000 rpm at 60 km/h which I think is still 2nd. I have had tranny fluid replaced at 277 000 km. I installed it at 243 000. It was burnt smelling. Maybe coolant in it? Please help. I need a truck for work. And it needs to be able to highway.

If you have not worked on a 4L50E transmission before, leave it to someone who is familiar with the the 4L60E. The solenoid is in the valve body and i know some who have put things back together and needed to take it apart again over something simple as a servo pin in revers. Best thing to do is get the truck scanned at Auto Zone free of charge or at a transmission shop with a tech 2 scanner for DTC codes. If there is a bad throttle body sensor or it's misaligned, it would affect your transmission's performance. The throttle body sensor send's signals to the ECM which calculates the amount of transmission fluid pressure though out the shift points, if that signal is bad then your shift points and firmness will be affected. There is also a cheap and great performance upgrade for around $50.00. You have a Transmission shop swap out the servo's for a Corvette servo's, it can be done in 30 min with out taking the transmission down or removing the transmission oil pan off.
Recap, have the transmission fluid and oil changed and have the throttle body sensor tested. It should show a smooth gradual increase in resistance with out any fluctuation. You truck is 15 years old and it may have a dead spot on the sensor now and it may need to be replaced. Good luck and keep me posted, Be glad to help and you can also have the transmission shop do a transmission pressure line test.

It's definitely cheaper to buy a trans from a wrecking yard than to have yours rebuilt. Before you do anything though. Did you make sure that the trans fluid level is full? I know this may be a stupid question, but I had to ask. The speed sensors job is to tell the speedometer how fast you're going...not related to your problem.
SOURCE: Speedometer runs erratic and transmissions drops to second gear.
The ECM or TCM may be the culprit, its also possible that a ground wire is no longer grounded or partially grounded giving you the erratic speedometer.

you may be confusing the torque converter clutch engagement with o.d. this trans has a problem with the T.C.C. regulator valve wearing out the valve body bore. this will cause the converter clutch to engage only sometimes or not at all. this will set a P1870 code in the control module. when this code is stored in the controller, ( check engine light may or may not be on), it increases the pressure in the transmission causing the 1-2 shift to be harsh. ask a local tranny shop to scan the vehicle ( most will do this for free) if this is the problem they can either fix your valve body (sonnax parts) or replace it with an upgraded valve body. hope this helps
