I drive a 2002 honda civic, when the engine is hot and i am in traffic, the car drops to below 20km/h and can't go more than that speed,if driven that way overheating starts.

The car starts fine in the morning, oil levels are fine, water in radiator and reserve tank. the ac cools well. the problem is common when the engine is hot and get into long traffic jam, the car makes a drop sound, when u move then the car won't exceed 20km/h and u hear a change in engine sound,if u contiune driving or force the car to move faster overheating starts. but if the car is parked and allowed to cold down for one hr or more the car starts smoothly and moves again.

SOURCE: 1995 honda civic, while driving engine gets hot & cold?

I used to have this problem too on my 95 Honda Civic EX. It would get hot then it would cool down when I stopped. I replaced the thermostat and it took care of the problem. I am not a mechanic but it was real easy to change out. I bought it at Auto Zone and they even gave instructions on how to replace it. Also don't forget to buy the new seal for it. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser overheating- REPLACED ENTIRE COOLING SYS

Do a cylinder leak down test. Hook up a airline to each spark plug hole. Bring each cyclinder to tdc and listen for air leak. Possibly in the radiator. You can also reverse the process by doing a radiator leak down test. If you hear bubbling in the radiator bad head gasket. Remove and replace head gasket.

it looks like that you cooling fan is not working, check the fan when temperature is up if its not working than check the fuse for the cooling fan, if its ok than check the current at the fan end if you fund the current the fan is faulty replace the cooling fan.

SOURCE: 2002 civic ex overheating

with your description it sounds like your fans are not coming on, also sounds like the problem was never solved, sounds like you threw a lot of money at your problem also... check to see if the fans are coming on at the right times, seems like a n air movement over the radiator since you say it only gets hot in stop and go traffic... well when your driving at a constant highway speed guess what you have air movement through the radiator... check also a clogged ac condensor with bugs, pressure wash it out so the air can pass through it easily... please rate my help thanks

Honda civic 2002 overheating

Had the same problem with two cars I had. First was fixed with a radiator flush and refill, second was fixed with a new water pump and belt. I would also look at the radiator and see if there is a lot of bugs and other gunk on it. That can cause the heat not to dissipate without the speed of driving pushing air over it. Pressure washer or coin-op car wash wash high pressure sprayer can clean that off.

2002 Honda Civic - In town driving when suddenly felt a drop in speed/rpm -emission control light comes on and the car will not goi over go over 28 mph - Pulled over and shut engine off for about 20...

Recommend you have the car scanned to pull the trouble code history. You'll want to know what the car thought was wrong to see if you can avoid same problem in the future. Many parts stores have a free scanning service (Autozone, Advance, etc.)

2003 honda civic you drive on the street with D or

Drive the vehicle in "D". The D selection is the overdrive. You can consider the overdrive as a fourth gear. The D3 is simply third gear, and if driven in D3, the transmission will never shift into overdrive when needed.
