Sounds like you need a new diaphragm in the carburator and carburator rebuild.

The carb low idle needs to be adjusted this is fairly common among the Poulan chain saws. Once you adjust the low idle from factory setting it will work

  • Anonymous Feb 18, 2009

You will have to play with it and see. Adjust it in 1/4 of a turn if it still dies then back it out 1/2 turn and just keep doing that. Every machine is different another thing that you can do is try to get it running semi ok, you can give it little throttle and adjust the idle. Also just to make sure, do check your chain tension you should be able to see the teeth on the bottom of the chain. But this doesnt sound like a chain tension problem

If not already done replace the fuel filter in the tank, it is obviously fuel starvation, if no better increase the the fuel mixture on the H and L screws ( turn anti clockwise 1/4 turn on each to start with)

My poulan wild thing chainsaw has 3 tuning screwes h,l,t and they have all been messed up how many turns out do they all need to be from all the way in

Check the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler for plugging. Check the fuel lines for decay or other damage. T is the idle speed screw and not critical--just back off about two turns CCW at first. Turn H and L jet screws CCW from stops 1-1/2 turns each--this should allow the engine to start and run. Start the engine and allow to warm up--if the idle speed is too high or low, adjust the speed screw so that the engine continues to run, but the chain is not trying to turn. When warmed up, pull the throttle full on and adjust H needle CW until the engine starts to speed up. Proper final adjustment is when the engine 4-strokes unloaded, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Release the throttle and adjust L jet screw CW until the engine idles fairly well, but still allows the engine to 'follow the throttle'. If adjusted too far, the engine will 'gasp' when throttled. Set the idle speed screw to obtain the above conditions. Hope this helps!

Chain won't stop when throttle pressure is released.

Start the engine and allow to warm up. Turn the idle speed screw (not the jet screws) CCW to reduce engine speed until the chain stops even hinting at running. If you get it too low, the engine will tend to die when it idles. Hope this helps!

The engine sputters and dies when it heats up. Is this Vapor lock? On cold start it works great and idles just fine but as it heats, the engine starts choking and soon dies out. If this is vapor lock, how...

sounds like the reason it starts and idles fine at start up is your choke is functioning... as your vehicle warms up.. the choke starts to kick off... Inspect your throttle body and idle control motor.

Wont stay running when you let off the gas???

Sound like the carb was never adjusted right. Unfortuatley, the carb adjustment screws require a certain tool that's not available to the public. (EPA thing) You'll have to take it to a shop to get it adjusted. That should solve the problem.
