Question about 1999 kawasaki ZX-9R Ninja

Starting problems,misfire and eventual refusal to run

Its a 98 C1..bike floods when trying to start,after being left for 3 days it started 1st time and ran for a few minutes then misfire set in and after 30 seconds she cut out and refused to fire at all. when the bike was lifted off the sidestand,a mixture of petrol and water poured from the ram air intakes underneath the headlight!..anybody got any ideas?

Hi it is definatly some dirt in the carbs, remove the main feed line from the tank into the carbs and gently blow some air into the carbs, and keep your face back, what this will do is blow any excess fuel includeing the dirt and trash that are in the jets out. just be careful not to blow it into your eyes. To actually see whats happing removing the airbox is also a good idea.I had the same problem with my 2002 zx9. Good luck

A friend of mine had an interesting problem. The bike would be ridden - no problem, parked and then when trying to start the bike after a few minutes or sometimes an hour or two, it would just planely refuse to start. You check for spark: it's there; you check for fuel and/or a fuel vacuum blockage and all is fine. Out of desperation you try starting the bike again after a day or so whilst driving around in your cage; it starts first time.
Sometimes you would ride around - no problem, stop to put in petrol or buy stuff at the cafe and bam; same problem again.

Cause: one or more needle and seats are leaking, causing flooding.

Solution: replace all four needle and seats, and btw while the carbs are out give them a good clean.

For a perfect job; synchronise the carbs afterward

sir,there are 2 reason
1. please check bolts of small fuse connecter near the battery ,sometimes it get loose ,ectually that is main positive connecter to battery
2.please replug the rectifier-regulater cuplers ,otherwise you need to replace the regulater

CRANKING BUT FAILURING TO PICK UP. EXCESSIVE BLACK SMOKE. BIKE CUTS OFF AFTER RUNING FOR 30MINUTES WHEN THE REPEAT IS DONE IT FAILS TO PICK UP. MISFIRING. CARBURETOR FLOODING.


1. Leave the bike alone, do not retry to start when that happens.
2. Make sure the reserve petcock and choke is set open when starting the bike.
3. Make sure battery is in top fully charged condition.
4. If you have not run it for a long while, then have the carb cleaned as the jets maybe sticking due to dirt built up and fuel line clogging.
5. Make sure your spark plugs, plug wirings and coil are clean and in good conditions
6. Have your ignition timing chain checked and ensure is set properly.
7. No air leakage anywhere before or after carburator lines.
8.Think that is the main cause, now try again. Cheers

sounds like you did everything you could but it does sound like there's only one option left and that's the CDI

Last time I STARTED MY VSTAR 1100 I CHOKED IT FOR 10 SECONDS ON HIGH THEN MOVED TO MEDIUM CHOKE FOR 4 THEN TOOK OFF AT NO CHOKE. 2 WEEKS LATER. I started up bike Choke on high bike barely wanted to idle...


Sounds like your flooding it out with the choke out. Try the next time you go to start the bike when it's cold with the choke out and when it starts push the choke all the way in and keep it running with the throtle. If it runs better after doing this then your flooding it on start up. Use 1/2 choke to start cold and see what it does. Good Luck

It all seems to be leading to fuel starvation. Have you checked the tank breather is not blocked which can be a small hole in the petrol cap or a tube from under the tank. It could also be a blocked fuel filter. There should be two. One inside the fuel tank under the petcock, another before the fuel pump. Here is the workshop manual where you can find all info you will ever need for this bike.

Engine misfire and cutting out when running at normal engine temp


Make sure your fuel tank vent is not plugged. To see if this is the problem, the next time the bike starts acting up, stop and open the fuel tank. If you hear a whoosh of air being sucked in you know your vent is plugged.

The C8HA is still available, it is NGK stock number 2168.
