Question about 2002 Aprilia Atlantic 500

1 Answer

Overheating x9 500

The bike is OK on a run but when you have to spend anytime stationary,at the lights or caught up in traffic it starts to overheat to the point where it comes back out of the expansion tank at pressure.
i have fitted a new thermostat and the fan is working fine. there is no sign of water contamination in the oil.
the scooter is a year 2002 piaggio x9 500cc with 7000 miles on the clock.

Perhaps there is an airlock or an obstruction or perhaps the pump is not working properly. If the radiator is still cool when the fan comes on then the coolant is not flowing properly.

I had similar problem last summer. My problem was vapor lock. Open fill cap and coolant line at engine. Fill until you have positive flow. If you don't get flow, you may have to crack fill side of thermostat and out put side of pump (in that order).

I start my bike and after 4 5 second engine hed is very hot

Some description of 2-stroke or 4-stroke, number of cylinders, type of cooling would have been useful.

In mild or hot weather the head of an air cooled bike could conceivably be hand-hot in 45 seconds but mostly it would take considerably longer, especially if the engine is a 4-stroke. Of course just because an engine heats up quickly it doesn't mean it will overheat in use and air-cooled engines should not be operated for long while the bike is stationary, except in cold weather, but be put into normal use as soon as possible after starting.

If the engine is overheating there are various things that could influence or cause it. Ignition timing, valve timing, fuel air mixture, lubrication, detonation, restricted exhaust...

Good luck!

Keeps overheating

Hello Marius,
Is this an issue that has unexpectedly came up, or has it been an issue throughout your whole experience with this particular bike?

Engine overheating

What model/type is your bike?
Is it water or air cooled?
Does it have a cooling fan?
Does it overheat when in motion or only in very slow traffic?
What indication do you have that it's overheating?

The solution will depend on the answer to these questions.

Bike is gsx 600 and overheating wen its sitting still running it shoots up to 200f and start smoking

OK check your OIL pump, this is the ONLY thing that can cause an engine to overheat, well that and NO OIL, so check BOTH. Also check the mixture isn't too lean if NOT the pump or no oil.

Overheat light comes on when sitting at light or in traffic

If you are not boiling the fluid out and it is not overheating I am thinking that it is a faulty sending unit. Another possible problem is the thermostat. It may be sticking in the closed position for an instant causing the sensor to come into play to early.Hope some of this will be fo help. donnyb60
