Check that the fuel pump is working and pumping fuel (fuse or burnt out) as it sounds like there is no fuel in the carby. To check if the engine is going to run remove the air filter from the top of the carby and pour about a table spoon of fuel directly into the carby throat. Replace the air filter and crank the engine. If is going to run it will fire and then stop

SOURCE: 1991 volvo turns over but wont start

If your air mass meter tests good, the I would tell you to check the HIGH PRESSURE PUMP underneath the Driver's side chassis pump holder-next to the fuel filter.

There are 2 pumps on your Volvo---the in-tank low pressure, and the chassis mounted high pressure. The car will run with the in-tank failed and the high pressure good. It will not run with the high pressure failed. Test the pump by applying voltage to the two terminals.

Another common failure, should the high pressure pump be good, is the HALL EFFECT SENSOR located in the distributor on the back of the engine. Once this sensor goes, it's no start. A rebuilt or used distributor may be the answer to your problem.

It sounds like you have a security problem, I had the same thing it would fire and run for half of a second and then that was it if anything at all. Had the security system rebooted, now it starts and runs fine.

Feul pump is good . fuse good . still wont fire

What is year--make--model? If it cranks good, but, won't start, have a helper crank it, while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. Also, check for fuel injector pulse.

Can you check for applicable trouble codes?

Using starting fluid eliminates the fuel system for the most part.
So that means it does not have enough spark at the plugs, or not enough compression.
You may need to go back and recheck all three components.

Engine turns over strongly giving the impression it wants to go but just wont fire up. 1981 2000cc cortina

I would check the distributor cap and rotor, if any evidence of even slight corrosion
exists, this would give the exact symptoms you describe. Replace cap and rotor
and (I generally do the wires and clean the plugs as well). If this is all well and still
the problem exists then check the timing on the engine as the timing gear may have
slipped. Cylinder 1 should be at the top of the stroke when you manually rotate
the engine until the timing marks on the crank and timing chain cover align.
You can check this with a pencil or a stick to see where the highest point is after
rotating the crank if you do not have a timing light. Cylinder one is the closest
to the front of the vehicle. Use a socket and extension bar to manually rotate the
engine (in the direction it normally operates only). If ok then I would
have the ignition module tested at the parts jobber. Hope this helps.

My 91 mitsubishi gto wont start and strong smell of fuel

Start by making sure you have spark to the spark plugs. If not you may have a problem with the plug wires or coil. It's also possible you're not getting gas to the engine possibly from a faulty fuel pump.
If you change the fuel pump be sure to replace the fuel filter also.

Are you sure its no spark? It could also be a bad fuel pump... have you done a check for spark? If you pull one of the plugs out and lay it on the engine block and turn the car over a few times you don't see spark, or it just doesn't fire when it cranks?

I suggest you perform this test. If you see spark I can almost guarnatee that its a fuel pump issue.

Try this test if the one above passes. Pull off the intake hose (big thick hose attached to the throttle body) and spray in some starting fluid. If it cranks and tries to run but then dies, that suggests that there is no fuel getting to the motor which is usually a bad fuel pump as relays and fuses usually don't burn out on their own. These two tests should narrow it down pretty significantly. Hope this helps! Good Luck!
