'04 vl800 shutting down (fuel?)

The bike is carburated, has 41k miles. right after fueling up. rode for about 2 miles then the bike shut down. had it towed home. cranked it up and it started right up, and idled good for a couple of minutes then it shut down again. tried to start it right away but it just cranked over without fireing. after leaving alone for while it started right up again then off it went after a few minutes. i could not find a fuel filter for it. any suggestions?

cleaned out tank, blew out the lines and cleaned out the carb. put premium gas in, the bike started fine and sat ideling for about 10 minutes then shut down again. waited about 30 minutes then started it up with no problems, rode around the block and then left it ideling for maybe 5 minutes when it shut down again. when it's running it's not missing or running rough at all.

I experienced something similar on my 2001 volusia vL-800 - turned out to be a faulty connection in the switch near the kickstand that cuts the engine off if the stand is down

The diaphragm petcock operates by vacuum.
Sometimes, the vacuum line comes unhooked, cracked or broken.

Check the vacuum line.

Also, the diaphragm petcock sometimes dies, and needs replacing.

The reserve DOESN'T operate by vacuum.

Bike starts right up when choke is on or off. as soon as i giveit gas it stalls out and dies. i just put fresh gas in it. also, it only has about 3,000 miles on it. it's a yamaha v star 2006 1100...

There is a fuel setting issue and the mixture to the cylinder is not correct. It can be problems in the carburator, the air / fuel mixture settings, possible there is dirt clogging within any ports and choking.
When the throttle is raised there is insufficient fuel to the cylinder and so it shuts down. check the spark plug, the gaps and the timing.

Rode home new 883;, next morning bike wouldnt start, battery weak. would not turn engine over. bike is 2009 with 40 miles, bought from dealer

how old is your battery? if it is 2 to 3 years old it may need to be
replaced . charge it up and see if it keeps charge, crank your bike
run it for a short time 4 or 5 min. shut it , and try to start it. if it
drags when cranking go buy new battery.

JUST PUT GAS IN BIKE,RIDE FOR 2 MILES.THEN BIKE SHUTS DOWN.THEN WAIT 10 MINS OR SO BIKE CRANKS UP AND RIDE FOR 1 MILE AND SHUTS DOWN AGAIN.DO YOU THINK ,I GOT BAD FUEL? OR THE FUEL FILTER IS DIRTY PLEASE...

Could be the fuel filter but I'd bet money on the fuel tank vent. Loosen your fuel cap and take a ride. Don't take the cap off, just loosen it a bit. If that cures the problem, buy a new fuel cap.

No fuel to carb, I think..

Its seems the the gas is not entering the carburator.
Sometimes if theres water in the gas (since you had filled her up ) one experiences same symptons.
Best would be to clean the carburator but first check the petc o c k if it is allowing full flow of the gas to the carb.

'04 volusia still shutting down

I would recomend checking to be sure the fuel and vacum lines n the tank are installed correctly, Open the fuel filler and start the bike and see if it has any change on the problem, if so you have a vacum issue.
