I want to buy a 2004 1200 sportster with changed pipes.

The bike has about 6200 miles. How do I check to be sure that the new pipes haven't burned the valves or are over rich? What are the chances of either? could I cure over rich with K&N? What about lean, how to detect over lean?

Too rich or too lean condition will only occur on that model if the o2 sensor,or computer is bad.(If it runs,You can rule out the computer)

It has EFI system and the computer controls the mixture constantly adjusting it.

Please rate this a fixya

Check your battery connections and make sure they are tight where the positive cable attatches to the starter and the negative cable attatches to ground. Sportsters are notorius for this type of problem when the cables are loose.

Hi Jennifer,
The straight pipes are very LOUD and in many places not legal (especially California) though some places don't fine you unless you are causing a diturbance with them. Check your state or province regulations. Jetting refers to the carbs and that they have been adjusted for the improved airflow of the straight pipes.
Maintenance on a Harley is no more expensive then any other make especially if you can do it yourself. Parts (especially chrome) for metric bikes is just as expensive nowadays.

2010 1200 Sportster, although 100+ miles fuel

Ride the bike until it starts "holding back" or whatever it does. If you think it's fuel level related. Disconnect the fuel line at either the carb or the tank. Turn the fuel on, or if you have one of those vacuum operated petcocks, apply vacuum with a hand operated vacuum pump to open the petcock and test the fuel flow. See if you have a full stream of fuel coming out of the hose. Then fill the tank, and retest. Notice the difference in the flow.

Now, if there is a noticable difference, what is causing it. It could be the petcock screen. I've seen the screens have a "too high" standing pipe for the main fuel supply. The screen has a "pipe" made into it that is usually about an inch above the petcock. Fuel flows down this pipe when the petcock in the "ON" position. When the fuel level in the tank falls below the height of this pipe, the engine sputters and sometimes stalls indicating that you need fuel. But, when you switch the petcock to "RES", another hole in the petcock, which does not have the standing pipe, will open up and allow you to use the remaining fuel in the tank. On a Sporty, this is usually somewhere around a gallon of fuel or about 40 miles or so.

One other thing that could be effecting this the level of the bike. If they has been lowered this could have altered the "level" of the bike. On a Sporty with it's small capacity tank and the shape of the tank, if the has been lower by as little as 1" in the rear, it will cause a problem such as this.

I notice that the bike is a 2010 model. If it's still under warranty, take it back to the dealer and let them figure it out. That's what a warranty is for. But, just in case, keep this things I've mentioned in mind.

Good Luck
Steve

I am about to buy a 2006 Goldwing 1800 with 21,000 miles on it. When I rub my fingers inside the tail pipe, there is some black soot....should I be concerned about this? I know for cars, this often means...

If the soot is dry, it's more likely an indication of a rich fuel mixture than burnt oil. If the black residue is wet and greasy feeling, it's more likely to be oil.

It's not uncommon for there to be some sooty residue in the tail pipe. If it's excessive, or if it's wet, that may be a sign of problems. If the mixture is rich, it can probably be adjusted. If there are signs of burnt oil, you may want to move on to another bike.

Buying a used vtx 1300

No, If it is a reasonably low mileage bike, you should have no problems.
If you change pipes be sure to rejet or remap fuel system.
If it has over 50,000 miles a compression check is in order.
When you get it, change the oil and filter, you don't know when or if it was done.
Get a manual from Chilton or equivalent and do all the recommended maintenance and it will be a good bike.
