My ZZR 250 was going nicely when it just stopped, it is getting fuel, has a erratic spark and when turning over the headlight comes on / off. It has had this problem before but has always started again a few weeks later without doing any repairs.
Dirty or loose grounds or a dirty or malfunctioning relay check your harness connectors as well get some electrical grade spray and pop open all connectors and give em a good dose undo all grounds and clean and re tighten them cheapest and easiest is sometimes the best Bought a bike dirt cheap cuz two mechanics couldn't figure out that the coil pack under the tank was crusty and from oxidation

Need to make a compression test on each cylinder in case you need a new cylinder head gasket, test the thermostat and check that the radiator fan works ok.Also after installing a new battery (which you should cause the old one will damage you regulator eventually) check that the charging system works ok.
petrol is low swtch to reserve or clean your fuel **** they have filters on them may be block this happens from time to time and check you have a good spark
The fuel mixture is probably running too lean. Old, hardened rubber seals between the carb and the cylinder are letting un-carbureted air into the fuel/air mix.
Could be one of two things
1. The carbs are gummed up. Modern fuel will break down after only a few months. The idle jets are quite small and will easily become blocked. Strip and clean the carbs.
2. The throttle cable is sticky. Less likely, but possible. Make sure it opens and snaps shut easily.
What do you mean when you say you tried more air?
sounds like you blew a set of piston rings. instead of building compression in the cylinder its pressurizing your crank case forceing the oil out the breather into your air box
