Question about 1998 Honda VT 600 C Shadow

98 honda shadow vt600 weird shifting under heavy acceleration?

I have a 98 honda vt600 it has a hard time shifting under heavy acceleration feals like it slips and dont shift untill you let off the throttle then it grabs and you can pull it fully open and its fine but to pull full throttle and shift gears it acts as if it dont want to shift and grab with out letting off throttle and let it catch all the way first any help is apreciated the oil is very clean in the bike and it only has 20K miles?

Have 98 Vt 600 CD, it appears to have only 4 gears, is this correct


Yes. The gear shift pattern is usually stamped on the side of the engine case next to the shifter. Early VT600 Shadows were 4 speed transmissions. When you are in top gear on most Honda's you can move the shift pedal up with no resistance while driving. It is a way I use to check that I am in top gear when driving at slower speeds.

Clamps rite on frame at radiator.mounting hardware should come with bar.put rubber patch on frame to protect custom frame paint.

It's hard to understand when you say it feels like a manual shift. Noise? Feel? I do know that the 87 auto trans does have a weak 1st to 2nd shift drum (as explained to me by my mechanic) that makes a grinding, elongated shift under heavy acceleration when it starts to wear. Under normal acceleration, 1st to 2nd shifts were normal (crisp, immediate). Since that day 8 years ago, I've avoided starting off to quickly, and so far have saved myself a tranny overhaul.
