Question about Yamaha XS 650 F Motorcycles

I have a 2000 yamaha wolverine it won't start

It has spark and is getting gas but will backfire thru the carb on occasion. it has vaccum at the rear of the carb only part time

It sounds to me like your bike has shorn a flywheel key. and is sparking at the wrong time.

Did you line up the stator plate line with the notch on the cases? Sounds like your ignition timing is set a bit retarded. I would pull the side cover off and check the timing marks.

2001 yamaha yz80 backfires and wont start


Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Faulty main circuit breaker and or connections.
4. Faulty ignition coil and or connections.
5. Faulty spark plug, oil or gas fouled, wrong heat range or service type, wrong gap, loose in the cylinder head, broken electrode or insulator.
6. Faulty spark plug cables, leaking or broken, internal damage.
7. Faulty ignition module, switch, CKP, MAP, CMP, sensor and or any connector in the ignition circuit could have corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets
8. Burnt exhaust valve or air leak in the exhaust system.

Will not start backfires thru exhaust


Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enricher.
5. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
6. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
7. Fuel line to carburetor or throttle body pinched or kinked.
8. Carburetor float stuck.
9. Fuel injectors clogged.
10. Severely discharged or damaged battery, you need 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
11. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
12. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and CDI box.
Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting check for leakage in the dark, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
13. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty MAP, CKP, O2, TPS, sensors.
14. Faulty neutral, clutch lever, or kickstand safety switch.
15. Faulty fuel pump or fuse or relay.
16. Faulty CDI box.
17. Tip over sensor needs a reset.
18. Check for engine trouble codes.

Backfire


is it a straight thru exhaust, or is it just a head pipe with nothing attached? If it's just a head pipe, you need to get some sort of muffler on it or you'll burn your valves out from a lean condition. The backfire is due to the vaccum fed carbs that yamaha runs. They work wonderfully, but under heavy deceleration, the vaccum still feeds the bowl, and it builds up excess fuel, which eventually burns off as a backfire. If it were fuel injected, you could have the fuel map adjusted to lean it out under deceleration.

Do you run this engin periodically? If not weekly, you probably would do well to rebuild the carb.

You may want to consider using a gas preserver in your tank in the future. I cant call the name of the stuff I use ata this moment ... if you go into a auto parts place and ask for something to put in your lawnmower over the winter (use this excuse). They will give you the right stuff.

Check the battery and make shure it is fully charged. Check the coils to see if they have went bad. You can have them tested at any repair shop. Last the CDI could have went bad.

Getting spark ,not getting gas


The valve is open. Is it working? Check for flow through the petcock and then out the fuel hose. Next check to see if fuel is making its way through the carb and down the throat of the intake manifold. If you are getting gas to the carb, but do not smell gas fumes coming out the exhaust after you have cranked and cranked, the problem is most probably one of the little idle jets on the carb or the float needle and seat. either you can rebuild the carb or the shop can. The spareparts aren't expensive, but it will feel like you were workin on a 40 rolex, with all those teeeeny parts! Unless you are major short of bucks.... todashop, todashop, todashop we go! (su nt to the theme from the Lone Ranber or the William Tell Overture, depending on whether you are highbrow or lowbrow)
