Check plug for good spark, if bad replace plug check ht lead and cap. if all good when plug out look at piston if can for hot spots. unlikely but while plugs out might as well look. could be inlet valve, your need a compression test to see if you have a bent valve not closing properly. could try the old way of putting finger over spark plug hole and turn engine. should be enough pressure to blow past your finger. obviously do this on cold engine. as you can see its a bit of a tick list. let me know how you get on, if that dont sort it we move on to the carb.

Stripped the carbs on sat and found the float chambers had a thin jelly / oil that I can only describe as thick olive oil. Talking to a biker down the pub he said it could be the petrol separating into all the additives. Goes like a treat now drained and flushed through! Thanks anyway. Your thought were just what I was thinking.

SOURCE: i need the firing order

The spark plugs on this bike fire # 1 & 3 and 2 & 4 at the same time. Number 1 fires first so there is no worry on plug wires if that's your concern. There is only 2 coils and 2 plug wires coming out of each. Make sure you connect the wires from the # 1 coil to # 3 and the other coil is # 2 and # 4.
Let me know if you need any other specific information.

SOURCE: my '86 suzuki savage won't rev up it just back fires

When I had my savage it backfired all the time. They are known for this. Make sure you fuel is not to lean. Just adjust the fuel. You should adjust that and put some sea foam in it or ethenol treatment since most of the gas is terrible these days. Running 91 octane will help. Also you will want to replace the muffler gasket too.
When you replace that it will smoke which is normal.
I sold mine but I know the bike pretty well from tearing it apart due to trying to fix it from not running properly. Let me know if you have any more issues.

Best carbs to increase power would 42 or pos 44 from gsxr models and how hard to set up?suzuki RF900RV

You will not get any noticeable Hp gains buy changing the carbs to a bigger carb. To get more Hp out of the bike you can change the exhaust pipes and muffler and may gain 10hp. The only true way to get a good Hp gain is to have it bored out and new pistons installed, Head work done like Port and Polish. Install new cam's.
